DATELINE: YPSILANTI,
MICHIGAN
Austin McCarty
(right) competed in his second run of the year, in preparation for a
marathon in late summer. The Ypsilanti Color Run was held on
Saturday, May 11 in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It was a party atmosphere that overtook the city
as Austin and an estimated 15,000 others dashed through streets.
Runners of all shapes and sizes doused in a kaleidoscope of colors
crossed the finish line in Riverside Park as they concluded their
5k event. Smiles were abundant
just about everywhere in Ypsilanti Saturday as the city was awash
with color and abuzz with people enjoying The Color Run. This was
the second year for the event.

DATELINE: A COMEBACK?
After being off the
air for over 30 years, according to reports, the Detroit TV show
"Bowling For Dollars" is making a comeback (see article
to the right). Upon hearing the news, former BFD winner Larry
McCarty is chomping at the bit. Says Larz, "I think I still
have a tube of moustache wax from the 70's... and I'm single. I
can use all the same answers. Where do I sign up?". The show
will debut in September.
DATELINE: MACKINAC ISLAND,
MICHIGAN
The countdown is on...
Brad McCarty and Valerie Bain will tie the knot in a ceremony on
Mackinac Island on June 8. The Columbus, Ohio couple will recite their vows in a
small outdoor wedding on the lake with a few close family and
friends with the backdrop of the Mighty Mac Bridge. An August
Porch Party is being planned by the

DATELINE:
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
Karen and Mike McCarty were joined by Ryan McCarty and his son Luke for a short, wet, but fun evening of minor league baseball just outside Grand Rapids.
The tarp went on the field at Fifth Third Ballpark after an inning-and-a-half. Then it came off for a batter. Then went back on. So we didn't stick around to see if the hometown West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Great Lakes Loons from Midland.
But we did see Rockford elementary school students sing the national anthem. And Ryan took Luke into the outfield before the game along with a lot of other parents and kids. And we did see a Whitecaps player leg out an infield hit. And a little kid beat mascot Crash the River Rat in a race around the bases. We also saw Luke slap hands/paws with the Whitecaps' pig mascot.
Oh ,and it was dime hotdog night! Fortunately, Karen's tickets (she got 'em at a school auction) were good for a free hotdog and drink. But I popped for a second dog.
We also learned from the free program that the West Michigan Whitecaps Hall of Fame includes Brandon Inge, Joel Zumaya and Ramon Santiago, among others.
We'll go again. The Great Lakes Loons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-1.
DATELINE: HOLLAND,
MICHIGAN
Roosevelt Jones will perform in Holland summer series.
Mike McCarty and Joe Lehman, who form the musical duo Roosevelt Jones, will be in the 2013 Downtown Holland Street Performer Series.
Mike (acoustic guitar and vocals) and Joe (percussion) will play on June 13 (opening night), July 25, and Aug. 15. The outdoor series will run every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 from June 13 through Aug. 29. Each night, 32 acts -- music, magic, tumblers, jugglers, and more -- will be spread along the sidewalks of Eighth Street, from River Avenue to past College Avenue. Roosevelt Jones also played in last year's series.
On June 13, Roosevelt Jones will play near Kilwin's on College Avenue at Eighth Street. On the other dates, the duo will be near stores at the corner of Eighth and River.
If you'll be in the area, stop in and say "hi."

DATELINE:
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
Not
to be outdone by Austin's Color Run, Larry McCarty and
Gina Deakins participated in the annual Tap 'N' Run on May
11 in Nashville. Tap 'N' Run
combined a ridiculous running race - a 4k with 3 beer chug
stations* along the race course, a full beer at the Finish
Line, crazy costumes, great times with friends, and
unbelievable athleticism. JAM
Active has teamed up with some rad bars in
Nashville to create this awesome day of racing and
community enjoyment! (*chug stations =
5-6 oz. of beer per) In addition to being a part of
an awesome and unique racing experience, all participants
received a sweet Finisher's medal (that doubles as a
bottle opener...no, really), the equivalent of over two
beers and a Tap 'N' Run
t-shirt to commemorate your amazing accomplishment. You
also had the option to have your race professionally timed
so you and your friends can laugh about how long it took
to finish a mere 4k while sipping some suds!

Dear Editor. I know you
have played a lot of Street Football. Do you recommend 1 - Mississippi, 2-
Mississippi,........ or 1 - Bolt , 2 -Bolt, 3-Bolt,...........? As a follow up,
is it legal to go 1-2-3-4-5 Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, Bolt, Bolt? -Mrs. Higgins Tree
ED
NOTE: That is a touchy subject with me. I tried to petition the NFL for the
new rule of 1-bold 2-bolt, but was denied. They are looking into the other
suggestions though of the side-saddle hike, and bringing a (Mrs. Hicks) tree
into every field of play.
Dear
Editor. I
will walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding in August. Which
scenario is the favorite among oddsmakers: that I will trip or
that I will go into the wrong pew? -Curious
Klutz in GR
ED NOTE:
Actually, on my trip to Vegas in January, I played the longest odds. I predict
you will be just fine, the wedding will be beautiful, and your toast (although
only 5 words) will go off without a hitch.
Dear Editor. Nice job on the Metro. Got some nice comments from friends on the
slides of old pictures from Detroit. Some folks are wondering what all the
slides are. Is there a place for answers or do you plan to put 'em next month?
ED NOTE: The photos you saw
were from a group on the Facebook which I subscribe. They have lots of old
photos and news about our old zip code in Detroit. It is called The
Ol' Neighborhood 48227/48228..
Dear Editor. Congrats to
Austin on Completing a Half-Marathon? It seems a little contradictory.
I also want to congratulate the Editor on Completing a one-twentyfifth Walk
to Chicago. -One-Eighth of an Only Child
ED NOTE: Since you are
good with fractions, how can you tell that the following fractions are from
Europe
? A/C, X/C and W/C ?Because their numerators are all over C's. Get
it??
Dear Editor. Thanks for
the Tips on going to Weddings. For your teenage readers, I'd like to recommend
the Rum & Coke. Nobody can tell. -Cousin
Russ
ED NOTE: Good to hear
from you Rusty. I also use your trick you taught me while drinking bloody marys,
and you tell them that it's just your urine sample. Oh... by the way... I really
think you should get that checked out.
Dear Editor. Just listened to the Mother's
Day podcast. Good stuff! Sorry I missed the taping. I have a couple adds: For
athlete/actor: Nobody mentioned O.J. Simpson and his brilliant, sensitive
portrayal of Officer Norberg. And that '70s actor? Mom's choice of Robert
Redford surprised me. I thought it was going to be James Garner. Also, Jerry,
excellent Donald Trump impersonation on "Celebrity Apprentice." You
gotta reprise it at Brad and Valeries's wedding on the Island. -Mike
ED NOTE: Metro readers...
We have a group chat every Sunday at 9pm Eastern Time. You just need a web
camera and microphone to participate, or, you can just watch. Also, usually,
about once a month, Jerry does his podcast for KHTS radio from the Metro
Chat Cafe'. Hope more can join us.
SAVAGE
IN
THE
This is a new
article for your editor. It will consist of things happening
in and around Detroit. As a sports fan, I have had quite a few
great moments in my lifetime. I
got to see Detroit winning multiple Stanley Cups, along with
seeing Red Wing greats like Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, and
Nick Lidstrom. I
experienced the winning of several NBA Championships, and
seeing the Bad Boys dominated Michael Jordan. I also saw 2 World
Series Championships in '68 and '84, along with seeing many Tiger greats over the
years. One Tiger
stands out, and that is Miguel Cabrera. We saw last year, he
hit for the triple crown, and is on his way to doing it again.
Why is he so good? I don't know. If you throw him strikes, he
hits the ball hard. Even if you throw him balls, he can still
hit the homerun as seen by 6 different videos (all outside the
strike zone) that Miggy hit for home runs. GO TIGERS, and GO
MIGGY!

GONE
BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Jeanne
Cooper, 84, actress (The Young and the Restless). Ken Venturi, 82, golfer and golf analyst, winner of U.S. Open (1964), inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame (2013), multiple infections. Steve
Forrest, 87, actor (Dallas, North Dallas Forty, S.W.A.T).
Ray Manzarek, 74, rock musician (The Doors), bile duct cancer.
A NOTE FROM GINA
For those of you who haven't heard, my dad is not battling dementia anymore, nor living in pain or with any suffering. He's always walked with the Lord on this earth and now he's skipping with Jesus in Heaven. So happy for him and looking forward to seeing him again. Please remember my mother in your prayers. Thank you for all of your support and love through this time with our family.
AND FINALLY...
Her Daddy couldn't be here for kindergarten graduation because he was killed 3 days ago in the line of duty. So her Phoenix Police family showed up and lined the walkway, cheering on Tatum Raetz, who managed to smile... even for a little while.
