DATELINE: OCTOBER METRO CONTEST

GET READY TO SHOW OFF YOUR PUMPKIN CARVING / DECORATING SKILLS...

Our October contest is a pumpkin carving/decorating contest. Your job is to create a Jack 'o Lantern, or decorate your pumpkin and submit a photo to the McCarty Metro. After all photos are received, we will open it up to our readers to vote for their favorite. This contest will be open from October 15th - October 31st. During those two weeks, get a pumpkin and let your imagination run wild. You can carve and / or decorate your gourd. Once finished, take a photo of just the pumpkin (sorry... no humans are allowed in the picture). Email your photo to me at mccartymetro@gmail.com. After the end of the contest, all the photos will be presented on this page in the McCarty Metro for our readers to vote on. Check out info on our Pumpkin Carving Page. Good Luck!

DATELINE: HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARY

The McCarty Metro has been in existence since 1965 after it was started up under the basement steps on Sussex by Dennis. The most recent editor is Kelly McCarty. Kelly had a short stint one summer as editor back in the late 1960's, but his role in the Banana Splits Club forced him to step down. After also taking the head spot at RADAR (Rebels Against Detroit Area Rock), and a successful Disc Jockey and band career (Brad Savage & the Cockroaches) Kelly resumed the role of editor back in October 1992, making his current reign 25 years this month.

Over the past 25 years, things have changed quite a bit from the old paper edition mailed to the families, to the current online edition which has been hit over 300,000 times around the world. Kelly would like to thank all of the readers and writers over the past 25 years who have made this a successful run.

DATELINE: VEGAS BABY VEGAS 2018

The annual 2018 McCarty Metro Vegas convention has been schedule for January 18-21, 2018. If interested in joining us on our annual trip, and let off a little steam after the holidays, just let us know here at the Metro. Last year, we shared the week with the Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). This year, I hope we don't run into their arch rivals.... the dreaded BFCA.

DATELINE: MACKINAW CITY, MICHIGAN

To celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary, Kelly & Margaret traveled to Mackinaw City, Michigan for a little getaway. While there, they went on a Lake Michigan Lighthouse Cruise. September on the lakes can be a little iffy temperature and weather wise, however, the days were warm, and each day was sunny, and the water was calm. On the cruise, they got to see several lighthouses that are not viewable from the mainland as they are out on small islands, or in the middle of the lake. It was a fun day. The couple at night also went to the Headlands, which is a 'dark sky' reserve. From there, they could see thousands of stars as there is no artificial white lights anywhere in the area to take away from a full view. Every night was crystal clear, and the couple also went to the Wilderness State Park for another view the next night which was awesome. Kelly & Margaret also took an old fashioned trolley ride around Mackinaw, and across the bridge. On the tour, they learned a lot about the city's history and the bridge itself, It was a wonderful trip! Along with hiking in Wilderness State Park, sitting on the quiet sand beach, shopping, and having some nice romantic dinners, it was truly a great getaway.

We took an evening trolley ride which took us over the bridge, and stopped at some historic sites. We had dinner at a restaurant that had a lot of taxidermy animals.

Dear Editor: What is the appropriate container for trick-or-treaters to carry candy loot on Halloween? Paper or plastic bag? Pillow case or plastic pumpkin? And should your tote bag go with your costume? -Anxious for Halloween, GR, MI

ED NOTE: The container of choice for me was the pillowcase. It is strong, sturdy, and can hold a lot of candy... And when you go to bed with a really bumpy pillow... no one's the wiser!

Dear Editor: Can you give me any tips for making my house exterior more inviting for little trick-or-treaters? - Can't Wait for Halloween, 9323 Sussex, Detroit, MI

ED NOTE: I always thought the most inviting homes were the scariest ones. Forget all the blow up things you find in your local department stores these days... just dress up as a dummy, and sit very still on the porch like my brother DJ did back in the day. When the kids come up for their tricks or treats... scare the bajeebees out of them by jumping up.

We appreciate our McCarty Metro readers and always want to hear your questions, comments, rants, or editorials.
Just submit them anytime during the month to to mccartymetro@gmail.com for inclusion in the next issue.

For those that do not speak the language, Le' Food is French for "The Food"! I would like to encourage our readers to submit their favorite recipes to the McCarty Metro at mccartymetro@gmail.com for inclusion in upcoming issues. This month we have some great dishes for to feed your family.

GERMAN POTATO SALAD

This is my mom's recipe. Everyone loves it. It is easy to double the recipe as well. There are usually no leftovers, but if there are, they don't last long!

3 cups diced peeled potatoes
4 slices bacon
1 small onion, diced
1/4 cup white vinegar
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Place the potatoes into a pot, and fill with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook for about 10 minutes, or until easily pierced with a fork. Drain, and set aside to cool. Place the bacon in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry until browned and crisp, turning as needed. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add onion to the bacon grease, and cook over medium heat until browned. Add the vinegar, water, sugar, salt and pepper to the pan. Bring to a boil, then add the potatoes and parsley. Crumble in half of the bacon. Heat through, then transfer to a serving dish. Crumble the remaining bacon over the top, and serve warm.

ADDITIONAL TIP: Aluminum foil helps keep food moist, ensures it cooks evenly, keeps leftovers fresh, and makes clean-up easy.

We all have seen articles in newspapers which we find humorous. If you see any, please send them to me via email at mccartymetro@gmail.com, and we will feature them in an upcoming issue of the McCarty Metro.
