DATELINE: OREGON WONDER KIDS

On our recent visit to Oregon, we found 2 very special, talented wonder kids (other than Nate from the TV show Ted Lasso) that got to show off their talents to their grateful grandparents. Cooper McCarty is an accomplished athlete, and is still competing in the Oregon Division 5 All-Star Tournament. Alexa McCarty is an accomplished dancer, and showed off her talents performing in the Mrs. Marcelle's Dance Recital at the Tower Theatre in Downtown Bend, OR. You will be able to see the highlights of our trip in the next edition, but here is a recap of these 2 wonder kids Cooper McCarty and Alexa McCarty!

COOPER McCARTY

Cooper's baseball season is continuing as of this printing. After helping his team (Bend South Mets) win the regular season as catcher, 3rd baseman, and pitcher) he was one of 14 players from the 9 teams in the league that was elected to participate in the Oregon 8-10 year old little league District 5 playoffs. While on the Mets in the regular season, Cooper batted .763 with power. Chris McCarty was manager of the Mets, and was named to lead the all-stars in the same role. Margaret and Kelly were able to watch the first 2 games of the all-star playoffs which Bend South mercied both teams they played. On Saturday, June 24th, the Bend South All-Stars won 22-0 against the Warm Springs All-Stars where Cooper was the catcher and went 2 for 3 with 2 triples and 5 rbis. He also pitched the final inning preserving the no-hitter and recording 2 strikeouts. The team followed that up on Monday, June 26th with a 15-0 victory against the Jefferson County All-Stars. After we left to fly home, Bend South then won a thriller on Wednesday against perennial powerhouse, Bend North All-Stars 10-9, and Cooper had the final put-out at third base. All-in-all, through the first 3 games, Cooper is batting .625 with 7 rbis and 5 runs scored. We wish Cooper and Bend South continued success in the state tournament!

ALEXA McCARTY

Alexa McCarty has been in dance for several years now. Kelly & Margaret always times their trip to Oregon to include her end-of-year annual dance recital, and this year, it did not disappoint! Alexa dances for the Mrs. Marcelle School of Dance. They held their 'Tribute to Disney' recital on June 22 and June 23 at the Tower Theatre, and Alexa was highlighted in 4 of the dances. She did a ballet in 'When You Wish Upon A Star'. She did a tap dance in 'A Very Happy Un-Birthday'. She also appeared in the Daddy/Daughter dance with mom Amanda who filled in for Chris (who had baseball duties) to the song 'Date Night In Disneyland', and it was great. She also took her bows in the finale song with all the dancers. It was a fun night and was a privilege to see this beautiful young dancer do such a great job. Good luck next year to Alexa as she continues her dance studies!

DATELINE: HUDSONVILLE, MICHIGAN

Ryan and Missy McCarty hosted a fete for three McCartys on May 20. The big event celebrated Chris’ recent birthday, Andy’s recent retirement from the Baltimore Police Department, and Mia’s recovery from an accident that broke both her legs three years ago. Andy flew in from Baltimore, Md., for his first visit to Michigan since his retirement. He now is working for a nonprofit to drive out distracted driving in Maryland. The celebration included a cake for Mia, Chris, and Andy, along with lots of fun and games. Congrats to the McCarty trio!

DATELINE: NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

Recently Amanda and her beau, Nick, came to visit Larry & Gina for 6 fun-filled days. Day 1 began with an outing to SOAR where the 2 young people spent a couple of challenging hours climbing a tower of 110 rope elements 40 feet in the air while the 2 older people sat in the shade and reminisced of “why when we was kids!” The next 4 days were filled with activities with various family stopping by; Rick, Kevin, Stephanie, Audri, & Braxton McCarty from Michigan, Karen & Jenn Fargo (Nick’s mom & sis) from New Jersey, and Sara, Rob, Bobby, & Charlie Brookfield from our own local state of Tennessee! There were several games of corn hole & pickle ball, as well as swimming, Nerf wars, and go cart riding. There was a tour of Nashville honky tonks, line dancing at the Wildhorse Saloon, ride on the Redneck Comedy Tour bus, competition in duckpin bowling, and a celebration of Amanda’s birthday at Amerigo’s. On Saturday night they all experienced the Savannah Bananas at the First Horizon Park. What a ballgame that was!!

On their last day together, Amanda, Nick, Larry, & Gina hiked Burgess Falls, ate lunch in a barn, and finished with a wine tasting at Del Monaco Winery before going to the airport. Fun-filled week indeed!

Enjoy These 5 Quick Summertime Hacks From The McCarty Metro

1. Remove Sand With Baby Powder

Did you know that baby powder makes it really easy to get sand off your skin? Carry a small bottle of baby powder with you to the beach this summer. It’ll help everyone get sand-free before they climb back into the car.

2. Keeping Mosquitoes Away

Before your next outdoor cookout, buy a couple of extra limes. Slice each lime in half, and press a few whole cloves into the flesh. Place the clove-studded limes around your food table to help keep mosquitoes at bay!
Another natural way to repel mosquitoes is to use citronella candles! You can find them in stores and online, but you can also make your own easily. They’re inexpensive to make, and smell good too!

3. Make Your Own Fire Starters

Need a cheap, quick, and easy way to start a campfire? Use dryer lint! It catches quickly and you’ll have a roaring fire in no time.

4. Protect Your Phone

Protect your phone from water, sunscreen, and all manner of other hazards by keeping a small ziplock bag with you. That way, whenever you find yourself in an environment that’s probably not great for phones, you’ll have something to keep it safe. (And don’t worry, you can still use the touchscreen when it’s in the bag!)

5. Shop The Dollar Store

You’d be surprised at the selection of summer essentials they carry in dollar stores these days! You can find party supplies, games, pool toys, flip flops, and so much more. Check out your local dollar store to hunt for summer treasures!

DATELINE: NFL PIGSKIN PICK 'EM BACK FOR A 13TH YEAR

The13th Annual McCarty Metro Pigskin Pickem Challenge will start back up in our September edition. It is a competition to see who can pick the most NFL winners throughout the regular season, on into the playoffs, and culminating with the Super Bowl. Each Tuesday during the season, I select 10 games for the following weekend. You come back each week before the first game kicks off and select who you think will win each of the games. No confusing point spreads, just pick the winners straight up. The deadline for entering your picks each week is the kickoff of the first game listed. If you would like to pre-register so you don't miss any notifications, click here.

Dear Editor: How do you cool down when the temp hits 90 degrees? That's how we started June in West Michigan. Any tips? I mean besides ice cubes in the arm pits. -Sweltering in Hudsonville

ED NOTE: Well Sweltering, there are a lot of ways to cool down on these hot days. For example, you can put chilled tea in a spray bottle and spritz yourself throughout the day. You can give your feet an ice bath. You can sleep with a cold water bottle, or even just do your best Darth Vader impression in front of a fan. However, I think the best way comes from the group ISIS, who like to blow up pools on hot days.
