WE HAD
Every Friday night in the 1950s – 1960s we visited Grandma at 2431 Parker.
Grandma had loads of vinyl throw pillows on her sofa, and had loads of long narrow carpet runners on her floors.
She also always had a bowl of “Kraft Dinner” (Macaroni & Cheese) on her stove awaiting
Uncle Jack’s return.
Every one of those Friday nights, us
kids tormented Grandma’s pet Chihuahua dog “Tiny”. While Mom gossiped with Grandma in the kitchen, we built “Tiny Traps” in the living room.
We rolled up the carpet runners and carefully constructed a small house using some of the sofa pillows.
Larry asked Grandma if he could have some of the Kraft Dinner,
and placed a few of the Kraft Dinner noodles inside the pillow house.
Larry then got low on the floor, peered around the corner into the kitchen, and used more noodles to lure Tiny who sat underneath Grandma’s chair.
Tiny loved Kraft Dinner and would follow Larry to the pillow house. |

Once securely in the pillow house we threw more pillows at the house.
Tiny would scream and try to escape but we unleashed the carpet runners that bowled him over,
and he would scream more. Grandma would then yell “Tiny, stop teasing those boys”.
Grandma would then say “Larry really likes that Kraft Dinner”.
Dad might as well have been doing it with us because he just laughed and never told us to stop.
(We even did this when Grandpa was alive. We had lots of time to do this before and after Grandpa’s favorite TV show “Rawhide.” Grandpa would get up, go to the bathroom, sit in the kitchen talking to Mom, and stay in the kitchen while Mom cut his toe nails or trimmed his hair.)
