The
McCarty Metro will be holding it's second annual
pumpkin carving / pumpkin decorating contest. Just like last year, your job is to carve a Jack 'o Lantern, or decorate your pumpkin and submit a photo to the McCarty Metro.
This contest will be open from October 15th - October 31st. During those two weeks, get a pumpkin
or pumpkins and let your imagination run wild. You can carve and/or decorate your gourd. Once finished, take a photo of just the pumpkin (sorry... no humans are allowed in the
picture to taint the voting process). On November 1,
all the photos submitted will be presented on our
Pumpkin Carving Contest page here in the McCarty Metro for our readers to vote
on during November. Good luck to all!
Please
go to our Pumpkin
Carving Contest
page for all the rules, and how to submit your
photo.

DATELINE:
ROCHESTER, MICHIGAN
In
September, Steve and Kristen hosted a party as Gina and
Larry was in town from Tennessee, and also Ben 'Around The
Block' Toner was celebrating his birthday (I think he's
like 120). It was well attended, and Steve and Kristen
always put on great parties. I would just like to thank
them both and it was great seeing all the families who
were able to make it.

Meet the Bend McCartys newly adopted friend Morty
Moustache McCarty. Thanks Brightside Shelter in

walking around his new home purring. Any tips for
new cat owners?? He keeps sneezing, hope he's not
allergic to humans.
IN
CONNECTICUT...
Margaret & I had the pleasure of a nice dinner
and conversation with Gene and Dolores Skadnowski
who were vacationing in MI. Gene was featured in a
few prior issues as he was given up for adoption
at birth. Ancestry DNA records show he is a
McCarty, related as a cousin to Kathy (McCarty)
Unti and Jerry McCarty. He has more recently also
been matched as a second cousin to Brian McCarty's
son Patrick. It was an enjoyable evening, and we
even Face Timed Jerry. Gene is also interested for
other McCartys to take the Ancestry.com DNA test
on his dime. If you would like to read more about
Gene, check out our McCarty
Memories page.
DATELINE: DETROIT
Al Kaline, Willie Horton and other members of the 1968 World Series champion Detroit Tigers sat on a makeshift stage Sept. 9 at Comerica Park for a Q&A with fans, including Mike and two friends from the Grand Rapids area. Some ex-players had canes, others had gray hair or no hair. They also included Denny McLain, Mickey Lolich, Wayne Comer, Tom Matchick, Tom Hiller, Jim Price, Dick Tracewski, Jon Warden, and bullpen coach Hal Naragon. Funniest lines came from Jon Warden, who said that Norm Cash sometimes came to games hung over, and that he, Willie and Al carried the team early in the season. Great time!
IN THE PHOTOS: Willie Horton arrived early. Mickey Lolich answers a question while seated in a row with, from left, Jon Warden, John Hiller, and Jim Price. That's Denny McLain peaking out from behind Lolich, and Dick Tracewski at right in the back.

Dear Editor: A
giant net was erected near my house to stop golf balls.
But look what got caught in the net in September -- the
MOON! Can you explain this scientific phenomenon? If I
start feeling lightheaded, would that be the gravitational

NOTE: I wish I had some profound thoughts or wisdom I
share on the this scientific phenomenon. Unfortunately,
truth be told, the net is not to stop golf balls. No,
rather Karen had it put in to stop you from heading toward
the light. Thank you very much Karen!

HALLOWEEN
TREAT CARAMEL,
CHOCOLATE & CANDY APPLES
INGREDIENTS
Vegetable oil cooking spray
6 small apples, washed and dried, stems removed
2 (9.5-ounce) bags soft caramel candies, unwrapped
1/4 cup pulp-free orange juice
1 (4-ounce) bar 53 percent cocoa dark chocolate, cut into
1/2" pieces
Assorted small candies, chopped nuts and sprinkles
DIRECTIONS
Special equipment: 6 craft or thick wooden sticks
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray
with veg oil cooking spray. Insert the craft sticks halfway into the stem-ends of the apples.
In a medium, heavy saucepan, over low heat, combine the caramel candies and orange juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the candies have melted and the mixture is smooth, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool for 2 minutes. Dip the apples in the caramel until coated and put them on the parchment paper until firm, about 2 hours.
Put the chocolate in a medium bowl and set it over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Using a fork, drizzle the melted chocolate over the caramel. Put the apples back on the parchment paper for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with small candies, chopped nuts or sprinkles and allow the chocolate to harden, at room
temperature for 3 to 4 hours.
1 large egg
12
oz shredded sharp cheddar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Fresh black pepper
Topping...
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup panko bread crumbs
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large pot of boiling, salted water cook the pasta to al dente.
While the pasta is cooking, in a separate pot, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and mustard and keep it moving for about five minutes. Make sure it's free of lumps. Stir in the milk, onion, bay leaf, and paprika. Simmer for ten minutes and remove the bay leaf.
Temper in the egg. Stir in 3/4 of the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Fold the macaroni into the mix and pour into a 2-quart casserole dish. Top with remaining cheese.
Melt the butter in a sauté pan and toss the bread crumbs to coat. Top the macaroni with the bread crumbs. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and rest for five minutes before serving.

PINK
HIMALAYAN SALT
THIS IS
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY WHEN YOU EAT PINK HIMALAYAN SALT
Pink Himalayan crystal salt is something that has popped up in the mainstream over the past few years, so there's a good chance you've heard of it and know what I'm talking about.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm here to tell you all about pink Himalayan salt and why it's so great for you, especially when compared to sea salt and regular table salt.
Pink Himalayan salt is unique in that it's only found in Asia. It is believed that about 200 million years ago, beds of crystallized sea salt were buried under a layer of lava.
Over time, the salts were preserved from the elements by their protective layer of lava now turned rock. These salts have been kept in almost pristine condition, untouched by the pollutions of modern man.
THE BENEFITS?
Pink Himalayan salt is chock-full of trace minerals. In fact, the same 84 trace minerals can be found in both the human body and this rare pink salt.
Some minerals worth mentioning are sodium chloride, sulphate, calcium, potassium and magnesium. Also, it should be noted that by eating pink Himalayan salt, you're ingesting less sodium per serving due to it being less refined and in bigger pieces.
So, if you start eating pink Himalayan salt, what type of health benefits can you expect?
•Improved vascular health
•Improved respiratory and lung function
•A stable pH balance of your cells
•Combats aging effects
•Improved sleep habits
•Improved sex drive
•Reduced levels of muscle cramps
•Improved hydration
•Strengthening of the bones
•A lowered blood pressure
•Improved blood circulation
•Detoxification of heavy metals
WHAT ABOUT
OTHER SALTS?
Sea salt is the obvious second best choice here. However, even sea salt is becoming more processed every year. Not to mention our oceans are seeing levels of pollution previously unseen before.
Due to the simple fact that pink Himalayan salt has been kept in near perfect condition since its formation, it's simply the best you can get.
Table salt is definitely the worst choice of the three. This type of salt is drained of its mineral composition, leaving behind only sodium and chloride.
Then, it is bleached and "cleaned" with chemicals before being baked at a high temperature. Furthermore, the iodine that is added to the salt is often synthetic, making it hard for the human body to properly absorb.
