DATELINE: YOUR
TRAVELING EDITORS
In May, Kelly &
Margaret took a trip up to Mackinac Island. They stayed at the
Grand Hotel on the front of the island. Besides the gourmet meals
provided by the hotel, your editors took an 8 mile bike ride
around the island, toured Fort Mackinac, did a lot of hiking,
sightseeing, and danced the night away with the sounds of the
Grand Hotel Orchestra. Although the weather was chilly and rainy
sometimes, they had a wonderful time.

In June, Kelly &
Margaret flew into Seattle and drove down to Bend, Oregon for a
week. They spent time with Chris, Amanda, and the grand kids,
Alexa & Cooper. It was an awesome week, and it went so
quickly. Besides doing a hike around Lake Todd by Mt. Bachelor
(where there still was a lot of snow to navigate), your editors
spent time at the pool, went to the Old Mill, saw Amanda and
Chris' new office, and just had a ball with the little ones (who
are growing up so fast). Thank you Chris, Amanda, Alexa and Cooper
for your hospitality. We had a great time.

Gull Lake XXX2 is in the books. It
was just a wonderful event with the weather very summer like. The
temperatures ranged in the mid eighties, with humid conditions.
This did not take away from the great play. Congratulations to
this years big money winner Steve McCarty, and this years' skin
champion Glenn Lukas. Last years' champion Kelly hobbled around
the course with a broken toe, and even though he finished back in
the pack, it was a great time. You can see the photos taken by Bob

METRO BIGGEST LOSER
The
McCarty Metro Biggest Loser competition has come to an end. It
started on January 1, and continued until June 1. The object of
the competition was to share ideas with other Metro subscribers,
and to help those that signed up a way to become healthier and
lose weight after the new year. Our team came back to the McCarty
Metro every 10 days to record their progress. Congratulations to
our group for losing over 110 pounds. I am so proud of all of you
that participated. You also inspired me in my quest to become
healthier so I can be around and enjoy my grandkids as much as
possible. I know I will take what I learned and continue on my
quest. I hope our team does as well. Again... Thank you to our 12
competitors... I couldn't have done this alone. Below are the
final results as of June 1.

My cousin Vera has recently sent me a cookery book, once the property of her mother, which must date at least from the early part of this century. Entitled The Leyburn Cookery Book, it was printed by T. Hiscock, the Wensleydale Press, on heavy watermarked drawing paper, o the small sheets being simply folded in half, kept together by a piece of knotted cord, and covered with a cardboard case bearing the title and a charming little drawing.
The preface, which is unattributed, explains the purpose of the compilation: "The way to a boy's heart is through his stomach," it is said. We hope that the pockets of the good people of Leyburn may be successfully approached by way of the same imperious organ. |
"To provide money for a new Piano for the Church Room, we
offer Recipes tried and trusted at fifteen a penny, with a few thrown in free."
If I haven't miscounted, there are 199 recipes, which, if the Preface is to be taken literally, might indicate that the
book sold for the price of one shilling. The recipes cover a wide range of both plain and more exotic fare, extending from Wood Pigeons, Stewed, and Sheep's Head and Brain
Sauce, to Lobster, Cream of, Nurse Payne's Walnut Caramel, and even Croquettes de Vermicelli au Parmesan.
There are many dishes in this well-chosen selection that are worth trying but there is on page 32 a recipe - reproduced above - from I. Chapman which I have never encountered
in any other book.,..and which surely should be made universally available.
'How To Cook A Husband'
First of all, catch him. Having done
so, the mode of cooking him so as to make a good dish of him as follows: Many good husbands are spoiled in the
cooking. Some women go about it as if their husbands were bladders and
blow them up; others keep them constantly in hot water, while others freeze
them by conjugal coolness; some smother them in hatred, contention and variance, and some keep them in pickle all their lives. These women
always serve them up with tongue sauce.
Now it cannot be supposed that husbands will
be tender and good if managed in this way, but they are, on the contrary,
very delicious when managed as follows: Get a large jar called the
jar of carefulness, which all good wives have on hand, place your
husband in it and set him near the fire of conjugal love, let the
fire be pretty hot, but especially let it be clear; above all, let the
heat be constant; cover him over with affection, kindness and
subjection; garnish with modesty, becoming familiarity and the spice of
pleasantry, and if you add kisses and other confectioneries let them he
accompanied with a sufficient portion of secrecy, mixed with prudence and
moderation. All good wives ought to try this receipt and realize how admirable a dish a husband is when properly cooked.
MARRIAGE ADVICE
FROM 1886
Let your love be stronger than your hate or anger.
Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend a little than to break. Believe the best rather than the worst. People have a way of living up or down to your opinion
of them. Remember that true friendship is the basis for any lasting relationship. The person you choose to marry is deserving of the courtesies and kindnesses you bestow on your friends.

Dear
Editor: Hope all is going well for you and your family. I
don't really have anything to submit this time, but just
wondered if a "McCarty Man Cave" page would work.
There are so many guys in your family, they could
post photos of cars, motorcycles, boats, first car clunker
stories, muscle car memories, or any other guy stuff, kind
of like a McCarty version of Jay Leno's Garage. Thanks again
for all you do. -Peggy

NOTE: Thanks Peggy for the kind words. The challenge is
issued to one of my brother's who is looking for a monthly
article. In a side note... My brother Jerry is good friends
with Jay Leno. In fact, Jay reads the McCarty Metro. I have
also been to his garage a few times, and it is awesome.

Dear Editor: Are
you aware that the infamous McCarty gang once roamed the
West? That is, until the Lone Ranger and Tonto put 'em in
jail in the 1951 TV episode "Trouble at Black
Rock." I don't recall seeing this gang on the
"McCarty Memories" page.r--
