DATELINE:
WARREN, MICHIGAN
August 1,
2014 was the day that mild-mannered mail carrier Margaret
McCarty opened up her last mailbox that wasn't her own.
After 31 years of going on with about her life with duty,
honor and pride, and neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor
gloom of night, nor the winds of change, nor a nation
challenged, had stopped her from the swift completion of
her appointed rounds, Margaret retired from the United
States Postal Service.
The final
week marked a lot of hugs from co-workers and customers
who Margaret grew very fond with. A large celebration with
food, cake(s) and gifts was held on the final day as
co-workers and friends wished this carrier much luck in
retirement. The singing was done by Maria Kepler & Carol
Nepsey (right). The McCarty Metro would like to also
congratulate Margaret on a job well done for so many
years. |

DATELINE: DETROIT,
MICHIGAN
Steve
McCarty reports on his "Rock The Blight" initiative....
"Well
we made waves and part of the “grand bargain” in Detroit
is $800mm to take down blight on an aggressive three year plan…
exactly what we were proposing. The site made it to the
mayors office and the concept actually got a lot of interest. So…
now that Detroit is covered, we should re-deploy. Are there
neighborhoods in LA that need clean up? That would be great
to get celebrities involved?

DATELINE: DATELINE: GRAND RAPIDS
Andy had to go back to work, but the rest of the Maryland McCartys joined Hudsonville's Ryan and Missy and kids and St. Joe's Chris,
and GR's Mike and Karen for a July visit to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. We saw a Lego buildings exhibit, a look at Grand Rapids' past, and a show at the planetarium. Look up, smile and say "the moon is made of CHEESE."

This much we do know: The McCarty Metro's Mario and Rod page is promoting Rod Allen for Congress, because, well, if the Tigers don't come out of their tailspin, fans will need a diversion. And, besides, he filibusters like this does Rod for the most part by and large in the calendar month of September and other months when the Detroit Tigers play, whether it be at Comerica Park, Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, Fenway Park or Comerica Park. Vote Rod: The Remedy for Success.

ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
It may be warm in parts of the country, but some people aren’t drenching themselves in ice or cold water to cool down from elevated temperatures. A new phenomenon has hit the social media circuit – the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”
The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness. People can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS Charity of their choice, or do both.
You can always donate at http://alsa.org.
Recently, several subscribers to the Metro have been nominated and
completed the challenge. So far, several of our Metro readers and
writers have completed the challenge on Facebook. To view the
videos, check out http://www.facebook.com.
Thanks to all
who have donated to this great cause. To date, there has been over
93 million
dollars raised.

REUNION TIME
On August 23rd, a
Calati / McCarty family picnic took place at Windmill Pointe Park
in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. Reminiscing was the highlight of
the day. In attendance were Metro readers Mary Jo, Dan, Peggy,
Tony, Barbara, Chuck, Pat, Cathy, Frank, Jerry, Margaret, and
myself, along with their better halves and kids (if I didn't list
them). It was a beautiful sunny day with lots of food and great
conversation. There was already talk of the next get together with
more relatives.

Dear Editor: "Jerry's World" last month mentioned boring games while riding in cars (counting garbage cans, etc.) As kids, did any McCartys ever play "count the road kills?" Or how about the burned-out-headlight game? (At night, when you saw a car with only one headlight coming toward you in the '50s, we yelled "padiddo!" or "padiddle!")
-A 'Jerry's World' Fan With Dearborn Roots
ED
NOTE: No... As far as I recall, it was just counting garbage
cans. However, I believe the games have evolved as the McCarty
family spreads. For example here are some of the games now
played... Brad McCarty -
Count the Buckeyes. Jerry McCarty - Count the after shocks. Larry
McCarty - Count the rednecks. Steve McCarty - Count the number of
golf balls that hit my house. DP McCarty - Count the ISIS.
Margaret McCarty - Count the mailboxes. Mike McCarty - Count the
places I have been knocked out after an accident.

Dear Editor: Games in cars in "Jerry's World"? The Macs played the name game. One kid says the name of a celeb, then the next kid names a celeb using either the first or last name of the previous named celeb, and so on. Example: Harrison Ford, George Harrison, Boy George, George Bush, Reggie Bush, Reggie Mantle. At this point, an argument erupts because Reggie Mantle is a fictional (comic book) character.

AND FINALLY... ADVICE
FOR HOSPITAL STAYS
1. From the very beginning, no matter how much 'value' you think there will be, get a journal/notebook and begin recording observations, discussions, events, etc. - you don't know what will be critical to remember later, and you WILL be counted on as a source of information & continuity.
2. Collect business cards from EVERY doc you speak to (and get pager numbers if needed). You will NOT remember these names later!
3. It takes a while to absorb & understand the medical stuff - just keep asking, over & over if needed, until you 'get it'...find someone who can explain in a way that can be understood...request diagrams/visual aids if needed...ask docs to write/spell crazy medical terms so you can look them up on your own time
4. Request copies of all pictures (MRIs, CT Scans) on cd and keep them with you
5. Request copies of doctor reports and other reports and maintain a notebook for reference and to stay organized. |
|
6. Discern when to simply trust the docs vs. when to respectively challenge them....quickly figure out how to ask good questions, and keep a running list of questions that need answers...don’t hesitate to take up the time of busy & important people if needed
7. BYOP – Bring your own pillow
8. Keep previous/home meds with you and just hand over the bottles when asked (which will happen REPEATEDLY) what meds you’re on. Record all meds given – what they are (both names), purpose, dosage, frequency, etc., and make sure you’re comfortable....follow your instincts and ask/challenge if something seems off.
9. You already know this one already, but I’ll repeat it anyways – ALWAYS stay friends with the nurses
10. Expect no creature comforts and just be grateful when they come around (i.e., the ability to lay flat for a nap)...respect Maslows hierarchy of needs...always pause to appreciate the little things.
11. Figure out how to manage fear. Do not spend time worrying. No guilt. No exceptions.
12. Fully leverage for ANYTHING. People come out of the woodwork to help. No hesitations.
13. Understand, FAST, insurance policies and request a dedicated Case Manager at your insurance company. TRY TRY TRY to prevent $$$$ battles....docs can be a huge help here by recording what is needed for justification purposes. ...be patient with the bureaucratic processes (but push when needed) |
THE McCARTY METRO WILL BE BACK ON YOUR CYBER PORCH IN OCTOBER
