On September 22,
Valerie McCarty was featured in the emagazine Knitted Bliss.
She was recognized for her modifications on their original
pattern for a Fireside Sweater.
Valerie's take
was an asymentrical version on the original pattern while
changing the gauge. This makes the original design even more
visually appealing as well as more cozy feeling for the
wearer on those chilly autumn nights.

DATELINE: TWO WEEK TRAVELING
WITH AUSTIN
Visited my brother Chris for a few days in Oregon and to see the Spartans play the Ducks. We sat 8th row right next to where the Spartans entered and exited the field. The atmosphere was great, and the people were really friendly. We managed to meet up with my Uncle Steve before and after the game. The game was very nerve-racking, but State's defense was doing work and our offense was putting up points.
MSU led 28-24 at halftime, and the stadium was stunned. It is very rare to see Oregon NOT lead at the half at Autzen. It was a blast. Unfortunately, our defenders had a few plays of blown coverage in the second half, and it hurt us badly. At the end of the day, State lost, but it was a very fun and awesome experience.
After leaving Oregon, I hopped on a flight to
Shanghai, China. GM sent me over there to deploy our code for our mobile app. Combating jet lag was interesting.
Things I learned in China:
• The food isn't that crazy. There are many American restaurants there as well.
• Drivers are crazy because there apparently no one follows traffic laws. People will drive the wrong way on a one-way street, they will pass you in the middle of a turn if there is room, the left turn lane can be in the middle lane, and there are mopeds EVERYWHERE. Some are battery powered, and at night, they may power down their headlight to save power. So, there are soundless, pitch black objects on the road at night moving at speeds above 35 MPH. Be careful!
• Cab drivers do not speak English. You better have your hotel/destination written in Chinese.
• Shanghai is a wonderful city if you have money.
• The air quality is subpar, you can definitely tell. I only saw the sun 3 times out of the 11 I was there. There is a slight haze for sure. This made running more difficult.
• Everyone dreams of leaving China for America or Europe.
• You can pay pretty much whatever you like at the markets.
Haggling is easy. They have jewelry, watches, and electronics for cheap.
All in all, a great experience. Wish I had more free time to go visit Beijing and the Great Wall. I'll be heading back sometime before next March, so if you want silk scarves or jewelry, let me know!

DATELINE: NORTHERN MICHIGAN
Karen and Mike escaped in the Escape for a weekend up north in late September. After attending a wedding in Ludington, they went north to Petoskey and stayed overnight at the Terrace Inn, a big, historic building that opened in 1911. Their Ernest Hemingway Room was outfitted the way the famous author would've liked, including an old typewriter, an oar for the curtain rod, and old cameras. And in Petoskey, Mike found a restaurant that had mussels and a dirty
martini! The couple eventually rode through the Tunnel of Trees, a shady, narrow road (M-119) between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. Along the way, they stopped at Pond Hill Farm where Mike did the obligatory pumpkin pose. Rock on, northern Michigan! For more about the Tunnel of Trees:

HISTORY ACCORDING TO THE MOVIE "STRIPES"
On September 14th,
the United States of America celebrated the 200th anniversary of
the writing of the Star Spangled Banner, our nations National
Anthem. An early Metro reporter, Zebidiah McCarty talked to
Francis Scott Key about what he was thinking about the moment he
wrote the now famous poem turned song. Key replied "Hey
Zeb.... Everybody calls me Psycho. You or any of your reporters call me Francis, and I'll kill
you".

DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Bring on the Orioles! And say goodbye for the season to Detroit Tigers broadcasters Mario Impemba and Rod Allen! Yes, the Tigers will be in Baltimore on Oct. 2 and 3 to open the their best-of-five baseball playoff series in the American League. The series shifts to Detroit on Oct. 5. If necessary, Game 4 will be Oct. 6 in Detroit, and Game 5 Oct. 8 in Baltimore. The games will be on TBS, so this much we do know -- that's not Mario and Rod's network. But you can catch a late-season review of their grammar goofs, twisted cliches and other head-scratchers:
Visit the Mario and Rod Page in the
Metro. And here's a late-breaking comment from Rod in the Sept. 27 game, when Rajai Davis left the game limping: "He started to reach for his left groin area, and that's a very troublesome area this time of year."
DATELINE: EUGENE,
OREGON
The big college
football showdown between the Michigan State
Spartans and the Oregon Ducks took place in
September. On hand were Sparty faithful Steve
McCarty, Chris McCarty and Austin McCarty. Even
though MSU came up on the short, the 3 Mcs had a
great time at the game.

DATELINE: BEND,
OREGON
A late night alarm
sounding forced Chris and Amanda to call to the local fire
department at their new house in September. Turned out to be
faulty batteries in the co2 alarm. The kiddos were awarded for
their bravery as they were made honorary firemen.

Dear Editor: I want to let you know just how much I enjoy The McCarty Metro. Really neat! I only wish when looking at the video with all the people in the beginning, that I knew who they were and who they belonged to. Boy... I thought 8 boys were a lot, but now it's like 8 x 100. Keep up the good work and hope this finds you all well and happy.
-Kitty
ED
NOTE: Thanks Kitty. When the kids have kids, and their kids
have kids, it ensures that everyone have a good working
calculator.
Dear Editor: I just saw an ad for a new movie called "Oujia". About 20 years I came up with the movie idea " Oujia be Mine". Can I take legal action against this apparent knock off?
-Larz ED
NOTE: I don't think you can, but I would go after the
musician Styrofoam.
I think you would have a case.

Dear Editor: I recently visited the city of New Orleans and tried my first beignet (ben-yay), but I have to say it was a ben-nay. So my question is ... Who's Ben and who voted yay? Signed, Gi-nay
ED NOTE: My
suggestion, you Mardi Gras wannabe, is to stay in Hamtramck and
try a paczki (ponch-key) and watch a rerun of CHIPS starting Eric
Estrada as Pacz (Ponch).
Dear Editor: It’s
been a while since I have talked with you. I just read about your
health scare. I’m glad you are “on the mend”. Hope you and
the family are doing well (how’s your Mom doing?). -Rockin Rob
ED
NOTE: Hi Rock. They go for that? Anyway, thanks for the note. I have had to change meds, and
I am now on the mend. Mom is doing well also. Hope you and yours
are well also. Take care.

AND FINALLY... FORT
LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA
A South Florida man with an unfortunate name -- or a strong commitment to pranking police -- was arrested last Friday on a litany of charges in Fort Lauderdale.
Jackmeoff Mudd, 54, was arrested on charges of assault, disorderly conduct, resisting an officer, possession of alcohol in an open container, and violation of probation.
He is being held at a Broward County jail on a $300 bond, which means that at some point in the last few days, a somber county judge read his name aloud in court (here's hoping it was Judge John Hurley, just to bring his week full circle).
Mudd is not the first jailbird to have a strange name, of course. In Wisconsin, police booked Beezow Doo-Doo Zopittybop-Bop-Bop for multiple charges, and on the flip side, a woman who tried to stop three brothers from robbing a Texas WalMart last year turned out to be named Monique Lawless.
But that's only scratching the surface. Check out these other
arrests...
