Known as "Uncle Jack", he was loved by 25 nieces and nephews and we will celebrate his life at a graveside memorial service on Saturday May 4, 2024 at 12 noon Mt Olivet Cemetery 17100 Van Dyke Ave, Detroit, Michigan. The celebration will continue at HopCat 4265 Woodward Ave. Detroit 48201. Each guest will be responsible for their own food and beverages.
Jack was the second of seven children born to Emma (Houtteman) and Arthur Schmelzer and grew up on Parker St in Detroit. He attended Cass Tech High School, served honorably in WWII and retired after a long career with Manufacturers National Bank. He loved pigeon racing in the Belgian community, participating for many years in the sport and was proud of his achievements.
As a faithful Catholic, Jack served and supported his local parish. He was well known for his continual good works in the community.
Uncle Jack joins his parents and siblings Margaret
Lipinski, Jean McCarty, Richard Schmelzer, Joann Murray, Larry
Schmelzer and Tom Schmelzer in eternal life. He is survived by sister In law Lois as well as many nieces and nephews.

Past Month Around The Metro HQ
Although there are some big
travel plans in the offing, Kelly & Margaret had no
major trips scheduled the past two months. However,
Grandma and Grandpa McCarty did some fun things around
Southeast Michigan by themselves, and with the kids and
grandkids. They documented some of the festivities.
In April, we took a couple
trips to Kensington Metro Park to feed the wild birds in
the nature area.
Margaret, Kelly,
Liv, Gray, and even Grandma Laura got in on the
fun feeding the birds (tuppins a bag?)
For the
solar eclipse, Margaret signed us up for an informative
Senior Walk tour in Downtown Detroit on the riverfront. They talked
about the sun, our moon, and the other planets in the
solar system. Oh yeah... and the eclipse!

On another day, Kelly &
Margaret decided to go for a walk at the Detroit Zoo. It
was a chilly but sunny day, and the pair got their steps
in.

Austin in South Lyon. Everyone had a grand time.

Draft Day - Detroit, Michigan
A few McCartys as well as
Metro subscribers took to downtown Detroit to soak in the
NFL Draft Day with over 275,000 friends. It was a great
night for the city, not to mention the Detroit Lions who
snagged a highly regarded defensive back in Terrion Arnold
after the Lions moved up to the 24th pick.

Detroit Tigers Opening Day
All of us at UHY would like to thank those who
joined us at our annual Opening Day party at the Detroit Music Hall. Despite the mediocre weather, that didn't stop us from having a blast catching up with old friends! We had the Music Hall rockin' on every level. The live band played on as we enjoyed cocktails, cigars, and dancing on the rooftop.
For a while, it looked like the Tigers may cruise to a victory, but some big-time hits from the Athletics made things interesting. Ultimately, thanks to another strong bullpen day with zero earned runs, the Tigers came out on top, beating the Athletics.
Manager A.J. Hinch mixed things up, going with Jason Foley in the eighth inning, and then calling upon Andrew Chafin to enter the game. Chafin walked two batters and got two outs before being pulled for Alex Lange. The sometimes-wild righty came into the game and delivered with a big-time strikeout. Tigers win, 5-4.

wife is trying to get me in better shape by monitoring
what I put in my mouth. I don't mind most of it, however,
she really wants me to cut out my few cups of coffee I
have every morning. This is something I love. Do you have

Sourdough
Bread
ED
NOTE: Kristina shares this recipe, which is the
best sourdough bread I have tasted. It is a bit
time consuming and quite a project, but the
results are well worth it. Enjoy!
822g medium-protein bread flour
64g whole wheat flour
745g water
17g salt
151g ripe levain
Directions:
Levain (9:00 a.m.)
In a small container, mix the levain ingredients and keep at 78°F
for 5 hours.
Autolyse (12:00
p.m)
In a medium mixing bowl, add 822g medium-protein bread flour, 64g whole wheat flour, 650g water, and mix until no dry bits remain. Cover the bowl and let rest for 2 hours.
Mix (2:00 p.m.)
To the mixing bowl holding your dough, add 95g water (holding back any as necessary if the dough is too wet), 17g sea salt, and the ripe levain (from step 1). Pinch and mix all the ingredients together and do folds in the bowl for 2 to 3 minutes until the dough
smoothes and is cohesive. Then, transfer your dough to a bulk fermentation container and cover.
. Bulk Fermentation (2:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.)
Give the dough 6 sets of stretch and folds. The first three sets are at 15-minute intervals, and the last three sets are at 30-minute intervals.
Divide and Preshape (6:15 p.m.)
Lightly flour your work surface and scrape out your dough. Using your bench knife, divide the dough in half. Lightly shape each half into a round shape. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes, uncovered.
Shape (6:45 p.m.)
Shape the dough into a round or oval and place it in proofing baskets. Cover the baskets with a reusable plastic bag.
Proof (7:25 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the next day)
Cover proofing baskets with reusable plastic and seal them shut. Then, place both into the
fridge and proof overnight.
Bake (Preheat oven at 8:00 a.m., bake at 9:00 a.m.)
I steamed my oven, but you can also bake in a pot or Dutch oven. Preheat your oven with a combo cooker or Dutch oven inside to 450°. Remove your dough from the fridge, score it, and transfer it to the preheated combo cooker. Place the cooker in the oven, cover with the lid, and bake for 20 minutes. After this time, remove the lid (you can keep it in the oven or remove it) and continue to bake for 30 minutes longer. When done, the internal temperature should be around 208°. Let the loaves cool for 2 hours on a wire rack before slicing.

Dr. John
Sever
It is with a profoundly heavy heart that I share with you the passing of our father, Dr. John Sever. He was literally the kindest man I have ever met. Brilliant, thoughtful, a true gentleman, and so very, very humble. Most of all he had an enormous heart and an extreme love of family.
He was born in Chicago, went to the University of Chicago, where he met my Mom, and then to Northwestern for his MD and PhD. His work gave him the opportunity to travel all over the world and often, he took us along. It instilled a love of travel that my sisters and I and his grandchildren have.
We all were extremely proud of him and his dedication to his work to protect children from disease. Few people can claim they have left the world a better place - our father truly did. His life long effort to eliminate polio has almost been met. Because of his dedication with Rotary, WHO, and the Gates Foundation some strains of polio are now eliminated.
In 1979, when he pioneered the eradication of polio via Rotary International, there were an average of 1,000 new cases of polio per day in the world. This year, 2024 there have been only 2 new cases of live polio in the world which have been reported and they are in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
While he had many awards, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, met many US and Foreign Presidents and heads of state, it was his family that was the most important thing to him. While I was at Michigan, he became a Michigan fan and watched the football games, always calling me after each game ever since. He supported everything we did and was there for every grandchild, every birthday, milestone, and the millions of little just because events in-between. Always thrilled to hear from us and happy to talk just because. He even
took the grandchild's doctor call of "Grandpa I have a hangnail".
It was taken seriously, and with a smile and full heart.

The Three Brothers
There
were 3 brothers. The first brother married a woman from Italy. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.
The second
brother married a woman from Poland. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table.
The third
brother married a girl from Ireland. He ordered her to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees......;)
