The Sus-Comb 500
bike race in Detroit can
now take a back seat now as the measure of a McCarty as an
athlete. The first
ever McCarty Family Summer Olympics games took place at Steve &
Kristen's place on July 31st. All
competitors received a commemorative medal and pins from
various countries which were sponsoring each event that
was played on this bright, sunshine filled day.
The McCartys and friends started the festivities by forming a line across the battlefields and used sparklers
starting at the opposite end to light other competitors sparklers until
Kristen and Steve finally lit the Olympic Cauldron and a little
bit of pyro, to
officially open up the games. After a group photo by all in
attendance, the competitors headed to their events. The Water Relay was hard fought as several athletes ended up drenched, but it was great
competition. If some weren't wet enough already, the Water Balloon Toss followed in a fierce
battle pitting family vs. family. Afterwards, Kristen brought out the frozen t-shirts, which had to be thawed enough for someone to wear. One team used the Olympic Caldron for heat, while others used the microwave, hot water, and a lot of pounding, as only a few
successfully finished.
Several events took place on the cement such as the Pogo Stick, Hula Hoop, Free Throw, and Squirt Guns, while the Bow & Arrow, Axe Throwing, Grape
Catching (with your mouth), and Corn Hole
took place in the back on the grass. A great lunch was provided and lots of great conversation, handshakes and hugs as getting back to some normalcy from
COVID was the greatest highlight of all. One thing this reporter learned from the event is that it is quite heartwarming to see just how un-athletic the McCartys actually are.
We'll just blame it on the pandemic, and not the old age of
many of the competitors (brothers). You can see several photos from the competition
just below, as
well as a recap video in the Metro Quick Videos towards the
bottom of this page. Again, a big thank you Steve &
Kristen for hosting, and all my brothers, the wives, nieces,
nephews, grandkids, and friends who made this a truly great
event.

HQ STORM DAMAGE
After getting home from our
trip out west, a storm blew in, and pounded the Metro
Headquarters. What we thought was a tornado, was
classified as straight line winds, uprooting full grown
trees, knocking down power lines, and large tree branches
destroying the Metro storage barn. Margaret and Kelly were
home at the time and are fine, however, what seemed like
just seconds, the storm wreaked havoc on their entire
neighborhood. Power was restored in 3 days. You can check
out some of the pictures, and the short security camera
footage before the power shut down.

DATELINE: THE
54 YEAR MARATHON
ED
NOTE: Being born a McCarty and all the
knee problems inherited with that, I
totally realize that not me nor my
brothers were blessed with blazing speed
or endurance. However, I just can't get
out of my mind that if I had been born 70 years
earlier, I could have beat Japan in
the marathon event at the Olympics!
Japan
hosted the Olympics this year of course, and their history with the Olympics goes back over a century. The first time they participated in the games was 1912, when Sweden hosted them. Japan sent just two athletes that year, Yahiko Mishima and Shizo
Kanakuri. Getting them to Stockholm was no easy task.
.
Oh,
I'm not saying that qualifying was hard. Shizo
Kanakuri, though just 20 years old, held the world record at the time for doing the marathon
(possibly because the marathon was extra short in 1912, so no one's sure if that should count).
I'm saying that it was hard to physically travel from Japan to Sweden.
With air travel not exactly an option, the Japanese athletes took 18 days to make the journey. First there was the ship to Russia, then more than a week of rail travel. Shizo needed five days just to unwind afterward, and he spent much of it taking care of
Yahiko, who'd fallen ill. This is definitely not the recommended regimen for an athlete in the days right before the Olympics.
So when the time came for the marathon, Shizo wasn't exactly running on all cylinders. He made it about three-quarters of the way through before collapsing in the heat. A family in a nearby house took him in, and he didn't wake up till the next morning.
Shizo was so ashamed about screwing up his race that he didn't even check in with Olympic coordinators before slipping back to Japan. So, Sweden labeled him as "missing." He officially remained missing for decades. Sweden clearly didn't look too hard for him, since Shizo didn't keep a low profile in the years to come and even ran the marathon in the Olympics again in 1920 and 1924.
In 1967, the Swedish National Olympic Committee finally got around to tracking the man down. They invited Shizo
Kanakuri, now aged 75, to come back to Stockholm to finish that marathon of his. He said yes.
After he ran through the ribbon at the end of the race, someone read out the time he'd taken to complete it. Altogether, it was 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds.

NOTE: This is a new column where our grandmas and
grandpas can share a short story for inclusion to the
Metro. If you have a short grandparent story, email it to mccartymetro@gmail.com. This
month's story is submitted by Kelly.
This
happened while Grammy Margaret and I were out shopping
with our grandkids Alexa and Cooper inside a Fred
Meyer store in Bend, Oregon. Margaret told the kids
that they could each pick out a small toy for
themselves. Cooper picked out something right away,
while Alexa was hanging around the Barbie Dolls in the
next aisle.
She
finally made her choice and decided on a Ken doll. I
went to her and asked "Why do you want a Ken
doll?". Alexa replied, "Because he has
abs!" I asked "What are abs?", to which
she replied... "Something you don't have, Papi
Kelly!" Her and Cooper yelled "OHHH...
BURN", and proceeded to laugh
uncontrollably at my expense, right there in the
middle of Fred Meyer.

This
month's post is republished from my friends at TheAlternativeDaily is going to explain the potential benefits of Epsom salts. Please read on to discover the amazing benefits of this super-mineral…
Epsom salt, which is not really a salt at all but a mineral compound comprised of magnesium and sulfate, gets its named from a saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England.
It has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, and also has many beauty, gardening and household uses.
Both magnesium and sulfate are readily absorbed into the skin, which makes their health benefits readily accessible. Over 325 enzymes in the body are regulated by magnesium, which also helps reduce inflammation, alleviates hardening of the arteries and improves muscle and nerve function. Sulfates improve the rate at which nutrients are absorbed and help to flush out toxins.
Here are 17
daily uses for this Epsom Salt. Surely you can find a
couple that will make you go out and buy a bag for your
home. I hope you enjoy this article as much as we at the
Metro do... And I know... Don't call you Shirley!
1. Soothe sore muscles: An Epsom salt bath is a great way to soothe sore muscles, cramps, bruises and joint pain. Because of this, it is a great after-workout soak. In addition, soaking in an Epsom salt bath is a wonderful way to relax and relieve stress. Add 2 cups of salts to a warm bath. Mix the salt in so it dissolves in the water. Soak for 10-15 minutes for best results.
2. Exfoliate skin:
As we shed our skin naturally, the buildup of dead skin cells clogs pores and can cause blemishes. Exfoliation is necessary to keep skin healthy, glowing and vibrant. The best way to exfoliate with Epsom salts is to massage handfuls all over the body in the shower or bath. Your skin will feel soft and fresh with this homemade spa treatment.
3. Homemade hand wash:
Mix ½ cup of baby oil with ½ cup of water, and add ¼ cup of Epsom salts and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Set this homemade mixture next to your sink for a nice bathroom hand wash.
4. Treat insect bites and poison ivy:
A compress made with Epsom salts is a great way to treat mosquito bites, bee stings and poison ivy. Mix 2 tablespoons of salts with 1 cup of warm water. Soak a clean cloth in the mixture and hold on affected area to remove pain, burning and itching.
5. Clean your face:
Your face need to be cleaned and exfoliated just like the rest of your body. Put a teaspoon of Epsom salts in your hand and mix with a little warm water. Scrub your face with the mixture then rinse clean. This facial cleaner not only exfoliates and rejuvenates but also helps remove blackheads and prevent acne.
6. Remove splinters:
Splinters can be tricky and painful to remove. Skip the needles and soak your splintered skin in an Epsom salt bath. The salts will draw the splinter out and leave the area clean.
7. Lip balm:
Dry, flaky, cracking lips are not only unsightly but also painful. Heal this uncomfortable condition with a homemade Epsom salt lip balm. Mix equal parts organic coconut oil and Epsom salts. Apply to lips generously to exfoliate and moisturize.
8. Tile cleaner:
Bathroom and kitchen tile grime can be difficult to clean. Powerful tile cleaners are not only expensive, but also often contain harmful chemicals. Make your own hard-working natural Epsom salt tile scrub. Mix equal parts liquid dish soap with
Epsom salts. Scrub onto tiles with a sponge and rinse clean with water.
9. Insect killer:
Mix ¼ cup of Epsom salts with 2 cups of water and place in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture around your home and garden to safely deter insects without the use of chemical insecticides.
10. Relieve constipation:
Epsom salts are a great way to relieve constipation. Mix 2 teaspoons of Epsom salts in a glass of water. Drink entire cup for best results. If the taste is not appealing to you, try mixing with fresh juice instead.
11. Fertilize your lawn and plants:
Epsom salts make a wonderful fertilizer for your lawn and potted plants. For greener grass, mix 1 cup of the salts for every gallon of water and spray over lawn area. To fertilize potted plants, simply sprinkle Epsom salts around the base of the plants once every week. This method of fertilizing also works great for tomatoes and other veggies.
12. Draw out toxins and reduce swelling:
An Epsom salt bath is a wonderful way to draw toxins out of your body. Soaking in a bath for 10-15 minutes is also a great way to reduce swelling. Mix 1-2 cups of Epsom salts in a warm bath and mix to dissolve in water.
13. Boost your laundry:
Epsom salts combined with a little essential oil makes a perfect fabric softener for your laundry. In addition, the salts will help remove detergent buildup from your washer. Mix 4 cups
Epsom salts with 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Add ¼ cup to each load of laundry.
14. Kill foot fungus and remove odor:
Soaking your feet in Epsom salts not only reduces swelling and draws out toxins, but also zaps odors and foot fungus. Add ¼ cup to a large container of warm water. Soak feet for 10-15 minutes.
15. Sunburn treatment:
Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is a great way to soothe skin irritated by sunburn. Mix 1 cup of salts in warm bath water. Mix to combine and soak in the bath for 10-15 minutes.
16. Hair conditioner:
Epsom salts make a great deep conditioner to add volume and remove grease from your hair. Combine equal parts of organic hair conditioner and Epsom salts and apply liberally to hair. Let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse clean.
17. Soften your hands:
You know that soaking your feet in Epsom salts is healthy, but what about your hands? Soaking your hands is a great way to soothe rough skin, calm aching finger joints, remove nail polish and remove any dirt from under your nails. Add 1/4 cup of Epsom salts to a large bowl of warm water. Soak hands in mixture for 5-10 minutes.

Fall
Off The Bone
Chicken
Ingredients:
1 1/2 teaspoons packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (about 3 pounds), patted completely dry
2 tablespoons chopped chives
Directions:
Combine the sugar, paprika, garlic powder, 1 tablespoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper in a large bowl. Toss the chicken in the spice mixture until coated. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in a flameproof 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and up to overnight.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Bake until the chicken is super moist and falling off the bone, about 2 hours. Remove the baking dish from the oven and remove the foil. Use a spoon or ladle to remove as much liquid from the dish as possible and reserve. Turn the oven to broil. Broil the chicken until the skin is golden brown and slightly crisp, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle the chicken with the chives and serve with the reserved pan juices.
