DATELINE: THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Former Michigan State Spartan graduate, Austin McCarty, has been accepted to the University of Michigan for his Masters in Business Administration. Austin will be starting in May. He will attend accelerated courses every other weekend for 2 years to accomplish his goal. While going there, Austin will be staying off-campus with his Aunt Marianne. We were wondering if there would be any conflict of interest in an MSU grad changing colors and going to their arch-rival, but then we remembered our color wheel...

When you mix maize and blue together... You get GREEN!

DATELINE: ROYAL OAK, MICHIGAN

The 11th annual UHY Cares / Dan McCarty Texas Holdem event was held on Thursday, February 8 at the Royal Oak Emagine. The winner of the championship bracelet ended up being Matt Jaeger, after a long, long battle of trading chips. Steve McCarty reports, that although the counts are still coming in, the event raised nearly $25,000 for the UHY Cares charities. He also was super pleased with the venue and event. Paul Glantz from Emagine was there to make sure it went smoothly. This year was our biggest crowd yet and, incredibly, Steve got a lot of messages from people that said they wanted to come but did not see the invite.

Steve is confident that next year could be even bigger! He is obviously super appreciative for all those who participated and sponsored. The event is in memory of DJ and donations will be made to the Lupus Alliance and the Cancer Society.

ED NOTE: UPDATE... After the Metro went to press, Steve updated the me with the final total raised from the Texas Holdem Event. Many thanks to Steve, the UHY Cares team, our great event sponsors and all the players for the new record of $33,000 raised.

DATELINE: PIGSKIN PICKEM RESULTS FOR SUPER BOWL 52

Super Bowl 52 is now in the books after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33. What a great game, and a great end to our 7th season of the McCarty Metro Pigskin Pickem. Congratulations to Mike Wiacek, who came from behind, scoring 140 of a possible 200 points in the Super Bowl to become the 2018 Champion. This also marks the first 2-Time Champion as Mike was co-champion in 2014. This was the biggest year yet, with 35 players qualifying for the playoffs.

.
Thanks all for playing, and I am looking forward to next year. You can see the final results of the season at http://www.mccartymetro.com/pickem.html
DATELINE: MORE SUPER BOWL NEWS

In light of the devastating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, while most players and coaches take a little R&R from the long season, New England Patriot head coach Bill Belichick flew right to Hollywood to re-create his role in the new Goonies movie.

WELCOME EMMETT!

Proud parents Adam Rzepka and Amanda Rolfe are pleased to introduce their first child, Emmett Rzepka, who arrived in this world on February 19, 2018, weighing 7 lbs 8 oz. ED NOTE: Congratulations to the parents and welcome Emmett!

DATELINE: MICHIGAN

Larry & Gina traveled up to Michigan. The only issue was the foot of snow we received during their visit. Quite a bit of difference from the milder Tennessee winters. Anyway, they attended the Dan McCarty Texas Holdem event in Royal Oak they got to play cards, bowled in the losers lounge, had some cocktails, and met a lot of people. While in town, they also got to visit mom. One plan that got canceled due to the snow was a trip to Frankenmuth, however, they did have a nice dinner with Kelly & Margaret at Sajo's restaurant. Steve and Kristen also hosted a party in their new crib (very nice digs) and got to relax with family and friends before having to go back. Needless to say their trip was very enjoyable, and Gina seemed impressed with Larry's driving ability through the snow covered streets. Unfortunately with all the snow, it took hours for them to get back to Tennessee with delay after delay. You can see the video when they finally got home below in the Metro Quick Videos section.

DATELINE: VALENTINE'S DAY

The annual Valentine's Day tradition continues. Kelly & Margaret McCarty joined Moe & Bev VanWaleghem for a lovely Valentine's dinner at the fancy Castle Of White Restaurant. For one night only, White Castle offers table side service with table cloths, menus, hostesses, waitresses and waiters. The 4 enjoyed a great meal of White Castle sliders, fish sliders, buffalo chips, onion rings, and soft drinks, finished off with a cheesecake on a stick. My compliments to the chef!

DATELINE: MICHIGAN POT HOLES

With the massive amount of pot holes created from the winter thaw here in Michigan, I think I have found my next tire (below), which I believe will withstand the worst of the worst Michigan has to offer... Also, in related news... Google Maps just came out with their February updates (right).

METRO CRIME STOPPERS... GOOD... BETTER... BEST...

GOOD: A Valencia, California policeman had a perfect spot to watch for speeders, but wasn't getting many. Then he discovered the problem--a 12-year-old boy was standing up the road with a hand painted sign, which read 'RADAR TRAP AHEAD.' The officer also found the boy had an accomplice who was down the road with a sign reading 'TIPS' and a bucket full of money. (And we used to just sell lemonade!)

BETTER: A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Bend, Oregon. A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs.

BEST: A young woman was pulled over for speeding. An Michigan State Trooper walked to her car window, flipping open his ticket book. She said, "I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to the State Trooper's Ball." He replied, "Michigan State Troopers don't have balls." There was a moment of silence. He then closed his book, tipped his hat, got back in his patrol car and left.

Our McCarty Metro Investigative Report Team has uncovered a bombshell this month. Illustrated are differences between people. The findings are shocking!

Dear Editor: I have it on good authority (a DNA test) that the McCarty brothers are only 11 or 12 percent Irish. What gives? I thought the "Mc" in any name was good for at least 84 percent. - Mike not-so-McCarty-ish, Grand Rapids

ED NOTE: OK... So we found out that we are not as Irish as we first thought. I hear Shaquille O'Neal, Barack O'Bama, and rapper McHammer are all going through the same ancestry issues finding out they are not as green as they thought. But cheer up Mike.... Because EVERYBODY is Irish on St. Patty's Day. Begora!

Dear Editor: I find that I have tried several of the recipes posted in the Le' Food Recipe Corner. I have some luck, and some not so lucky results. Can you empathize with me on my culinary struggles? -Working on my skills

ED NOTE: Not everything turns out as expected, so I have to edit some out. Like the famous skull and crossbones breakfast. Shown below are what the dish is 'supposed to look like, the tools needed, and my feeble attempt at the finished product. The eggs begged me to put it out of its' misery!

TORTILLA WRAPS
(Also known as Larry’s Sissy Wraps)
Makes approx. 48

Submitted by Gina

INGREDIENTS...

8-count pkg Large Flour Tortillas
1 packet Taco Seasoning Mix
8 oz Cream Cheese – softened
8 oz Sour Cream
6 Green Onions (chopped)
4 oz Chopped Green Chiles (drained)
8 oz Cheddar Cheese (shredded-about 2 cups)

DIRECTIONS...

Blend cream cheese and sour cream together in a bowl with electric mixer. Add taco seasoning, onions, chiles, and cheddar cheese. Beat just until blended. Taste and add salt & pepper as needed. Spread mixture thinly and evenly over tortillas to within about ¼ inch of the edges. Roll up each filled tortilla jelly-roll fashion and wrap individually in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours and no more than 24 hours. Just before serving, slice each tortilla roll-up in 1/2 – 3/4 inch pinwheel rounds. You should get about 6 pinwheels per tortilla. They will become dry if sliced too far in advance.

These taste delicious just as is, but you can have your favorite salsa or dips ready on the side. Good choices are ranch dressing, guacamole, and sour cream.

We all have seen articles in newspapers which we find humorous. If you see any, please send them to me via email at mccartymetro@gmail.com, and we will feature them in an upcoming issue of the McCarty Metro.
