In 25 previous
attempts at Gull Lake's top prize, your Metro editor, Kelly
McCarty, finally got his name etched on the Gull Lake Trophy and
drove home from Augusta, Michigan with the tournament's green jacket. The
annual golf tournament was first
held in 1985, and over the years has had over 50 competitors
from the US and Canada. The golfers this year celebrated the 31st
anniversary of the event. In winning,
Kelly joins brothers Rick McCarty (1985, 2002) and Dan McCarty
(1986, 1993, 1994) as tournament winners. During the
week, Kelly won 15 skins and 3 greenies on his way to a wire to
wire victory. He jumped out on day one, and never trailed in the
event. Frank Merriam (12 skins) and Mike Wiacek (8 skins)
finished second and third. Kelly, who has missed the previous 5
events says, "I feel fortunate to have been invited
back and to renew old friendships and develop new ones with a
great group of guys. It was a very special 3 days for me."

GULL LAKE XXXI - THE
RETURN
After going
without a McCarty for the past 6 years, Mike Wiacek and Augusta
golf officials announced that Kelly McCarty will once again be
in the field of 12 for Gull Lake XXXI being held from May 20-22
outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mike Wiacek reported the news in
his January press conference (email), "I hope everyone
finds a little warmth or the thought of warm weather in this
note. Exciting news to Gull Lake 2015 the return of Kelly
McCarty! It will be great to have them back this year after a
short hiatus." Kelly is the only contestant this year that
appeared in the original event in 1985. On the shelf for this
event is Glen Lukas, Jim Prentis and Steve McCarty.
