ABOUT
ST. PATRICK
St. Patrick's given name was Maewyn Succat and he was born in Britain around 385 AD. At age 16 he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. During his 6 years as a slave he turned to religion for solace. He escaped slavery and made his way to Gaul where he changed his name to Patrick and studied in the monastery under St. Germain. St. Patrick converted pagans to Christianity, angering the Celtic Druids who threw him in prison many times as a result.
It is believed that St. Patrick died on March 17th, the day that we now celebrate St. Patrick's Day. March 17th is also feast day in Ireland.
The actual color of St. Patrick is blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow.
St. Patrick did not actually drive snakes out of Ireland; the snakes represent the Pagans that he converted to Christianity.

That
Meteorite in Russia was really cool. Any chance of getting one of those from Tennessee for
our annual 4th of July celebration? -Pyro in Peru
ED NOTE: I
heard the Russians are funnelling these into Lebanon (TN) as
we speak. What gives creedence to this specific firework is that
it, along with most of the Tennessee fireworks, are
shot off during daylight. Just ask Larry McCarty.
I was relaxing reading my February edition of the Metro, when I
noticed that my favorite page was missing. I would like you to
please send me a new
edition with the Metro TMZ page. -Loyal Metro Reader
ED NOTE: Due to
the lack of reader support, the Metro TMZ
will no longer be a monthly page. We will try to encorporate some
of the features on that page into other pages in the future,
including the videos. This will help streamline your Metro.
All
of my friends have a cellphone or iPhone. Am I wrong not to
indulge in this passing fad? - Rotary in GR
ED NOTE: I
hate rotarys, or round-abouts as we call them. I think they are
dangerous to begin with, then you get all these yahoos talking on
the damn phones. So in answer to your question... Do not talk on
cellphones or iPhones while driving in rotarys in Grand Rapids.
I just received my tax return back from the IRS. It puzzles me! They are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I guess it was
because of my response to the question: "List all dependents?" I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42 million
unemployed people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons;
half of Mexico; and 535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate." Evidently, this was NOT an acceptable answer.
I keep asking myself, who did I miss? -Mike W
ED NOTE: I think
you missed your two daughters.

NOW HEAR
THIS! NOT ALL THIEVES ARE STUPID
-
Some people left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car's registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people's home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration/insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener. This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.

Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and
a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it... Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were
stolen.

I never thought of
this. This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin number and I've replied a little while ago.' When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.Moral of the lesson: a. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc.... b. And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back. c. Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends' who text
you.

ALSO PASSED
ON... BUT NOT AS WELL KNOWN
|
Steve Demeter (January 27, 1935 – February 3, 2013)
Steve was
a professional baseball player and scout. He played in Major League Baseball as a third baseman for two seasons.
Demeter played for the Detroit Tigers in 1959. Prior to the 1960 season he was
the man traded to the Cleveland Indians for Norm Cash. The trade turned out to be one of the most lop-sided trades in major league baseball history, as Demeter played only four games for the Indians before being returned to the minor leagues, from which he never returned. Cash went on to win the 1961 AL batting championship and was one of the top sluggers of the 1960s, hitting 377 career home
runs.
Demeter was a fixture of the Rochester Red Wings teams of the mid-1960s, hitting 272 minor league home runs, and has been inducted into the International League Hall of Fame. |
