Dateline: Vegas Baby, Vegas

The McCarty Metro had their annual Vegas Baby, Vegas trip in January. Most of the regular cast was back in sin city, along with some newbies for their annual trip. In all, 13 people made the trek, including McCartys Steve, Kelly, Larry, Rick, Dennis, Mike, Austin, Brad, Chris, and brother from another mother, Robert, Joe, and others. There are a few photos on the site, but all other records of the trip have been locked in the vault under the legal precedent 'What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!'

Dateline: UHY Cares Texas Holdem Charity Event

The annual UHY Cares Texas Holdem charity fundraiser took place on February 7th at Petruzzello's Banquet Center in Rochester, Michigan. Although the weather was cold and snowy, the event was another huge success. Thank you to Steve McCarty and the entire UHY Cares team who put forward this great event, and to all the sponsors and players who always show up for the great annual event.
.

A word from UHY CEO Steve McCarty:

"Our 15th annual Texas Hold 'Em tournament in memory of my brother Danny was another smashing success! Even though the weather was poor, we had nearly 200 players, spectators, and generous sponsors raising over $25,000 for many families in need and various local charities. At UHY LLP, Certified Public Accountants, we believe in giving back to our community and we are grateful for support of so many."

Dateline: McCarty Metro Pigskin Pickem Winner Crowned

Well, Super Bowl 59 was played and I am pretty sure if the Lions were in the game, they would have beat either team.  But the Philadelphia Eagles did beat the Kansas City Chiefs in a lopsided game. Congrats to our season 14 winner, Champ, who came from 2nd place and ended up winning the whole thing by only 2 points. We had 58 players during the season, and 55 who qualified for the playoffs. Thank you to our players for taking time the last 5 months to play along this year. I really appreciated it, and it's nice to see we had more players this year than ever before! Check out the final standings on the Pigskin Pickem page at http://www.mccartymetro.com/pickem.html.

Dateline: Galapagos Islands

Chuck & Jane left Boston for Ecuador on February 6th but didn’t get to the Galapagos until the 8th. Ecuador is obsessive about keeping exotic and invasive species, and deadly pathogens, out of the islands, so the restrictions and inspections for getting there almost make it like a separate country within the country. We did a land tour, not a cruise, and stayed on Isabela, the largest island, and Santa Cruz, the most populous. We also took a day trip to Bartolomé Island. We left on the 16th, arriving home on the 17th.

Our most exciting experiences were our encounters with the wildlife—the land tortoises and the sea turtles, the amazing tropical sea life, including rays, colorful parrot fish and clown fish, sharks, lobsters, seahorses, and huge, iridescent schools of who-knows-what?  The birds were also a treat, especially the blue footed boobies and the penguins. The sea lions were everywhere, but mostly on the docks and the benches at bus stops. (Do they get a discount fare?) We think these photos will give you an idea of what we saw, but they only scratch the surface.

Dear Editor: Recently I found myself to be a passenger in a Chevy Trax. I was surprised to find that the passenger seat does not have an armrest for the passenger, yet it does have an armrest for the driver. Seeing as you are a Trax owner, is the lack of an armrest a space issue as there seemed to be no significant space between the driver and passenger? -Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty I'm free at last

ED NOTE: I always say that the Trax is small but roomy! It is quite possible they try to make it more spacious inside by not including a passenger arm rest. My British friend who is a rather large man with a bit of a potty mouth also owns a Chevy Trax. He must also think it is really-really small inside because I asked him about his Trax and what he uses it for, he just shakes his head and says in his British accent, "It drives me nuts!"

Dear Editor: For years I have mocked the McCarty Metro for publishing The License Plate Game because it includes Washington DC and the provinces of Canada. To my surprise, we spotted a Washington DC license plate on a recent trip and joyfully marked that off the list. When will Trump make Canada the 51st State so I can stop complaining about your inclusion of Canada's provinces? -Jose' Cannusee

ED NOTE: I'm not sure if it ever will happen, but If Canada does become the 51st state, it will be huuuuuuge!

Dear Editor: I know the McCarty Metro remains fair and balanced and refrains from stepping in the political arena. However, I was wondering if I might drag you in on an environmental question I have and help me with my dilemma. Global Warming vs Climate Change. Recently in TN we had snow and 7 degrees. One of my liberal friends said "See, that proves climate change". I told him, "The coldest temperature ever recorded in Tennessee was -32 degrees F on December 30, 1917 in Mountain City, TN" To which he said, "See, that proves Global Warming". My dilemma is, what should I have done after I hit him in the head with my snow shovel? -Waiting for spring thaw to dispose of a body

ED NOTE: Global warming... climate change, tomato... tamahto, berrydabody... bury the body............ figuratively!

Dear Editor: When is the time change? And are we supposed to gain an hour or lose an hour? Will this be Eastern time, Standard time, or Daylight time or what? My clocks await your answer. -Zoned Out in Hudsonville, Mich.,

ED NOTE: Spring forward your clocks on March 9. One of the things I hate about that day is changing all the clocks in the house to be on Daylight Savings Time. However, one of the best things about Daylight Saving Time is that the clock in my Trax will finally be correct again.

Dear Editor: If I burp in a restaurant, is this still considered a compliment to the chef? -That's What Dad Told Me, West Michigan

ED NOTE: I learned a lot of my eating out etiquette with advice from dad as he was well traveled. It is true that if you burp, it is a compliment to the chef. If you burp and fart, that's even a bigger compliment. But... If you burp, fart, and sneeze at the same time.... You will die!

An Irish Eulogy

Maggie O'Brien gave this touching eulogy at her late husband Casey O'Brien's funeral.

"Casey needed a blood transfusion, but his blood type was not on record at the hospital. So the doctors asked me if I knew what it was? They urgently needed to know to save Casey's life. Tragically, I had never known his blood type, so I only had time to hold his hand and say goodbye. I'll never forget how supportive my Casey was. Even as he was fading away, he kept on whispering to me, 'Be positive... Be positive!'. That was my Casey. Always thinking of others!"
