Mike and Karen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary early. On a weekend in late June, they took their children’s families to the Dearborn area to spend time at the place Mike and Karen met (Henry Ford Museum) and other sites. Karen was a waitress and Mike flipped hamburgers at the museum’s Coffee Shop (which is no longer). While at The Henry Ford, they also visited Greenfield Village and saw a vintage baseball game. The McCartys and Besselsens stayed at the Dearborn Inn, where Karen also was a waitress. The group drove past Emmanuel Lutheran Church where Mike and Karen tied the knot on July 1, 1972. They saw Karen’s old house in Dearborn and they posed for pics at what’s left of Mike’s old house on Sussex Street in Detroit. On the way back home, they spent time at Michigan State University. The group had fun and laughs at places that hold special meaning.

DATELINE: BOBBY
& CHARLIE TOUR THE MT JULIET POLICE DEPARTMENT
On
July 26, Bobby and Charlie received an exclusive tour of the
Mt. Juliet Police Department, guided by Officers Jamie
Fialkowski and Shanna Drake. Bobby and Charlie donated new
stuffed animals that could be handed out by officers when
responding to domestic or accident situations. Upon entering
the station, officers presented Bobby and Charlie with
honorary police badges. While on tour, they met the Chief
along with officers in dispatch, record keeping, detectives,
evidence room, media, K-9, and more.
A
highlight of the tour was sitting in a police car, listening
to the siren, and seeing the technology behind the new light
bars on the vehicles.
Also, a trip to the police department would not be complete without
a few police jokes...
When a giant fly attacked the city, the police called the
swat team.
The toilets at the police station were blown up by a rowdy
mob. The cops have nothing to go on now.
I came home to find a cop in my bed. He was undercover.
DATELINE: RZEPKA
FAMILY REUNION
At the end of July,
Marianne organized the second Rzepka family reunion up in
Cross Village, Michigan. She got a house right on Lake
Michigan again, so there was a lot of relaxation on our own
private beach, combined with a lot of adventures in the
U.P., Mackinac Island, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and other
destinations in and around the famed Tunnel Of Trees.
There was also a lot of great tasting Polish food during
the week. It
was great seeing the family and their families on a great
week together. Thank you again Marianne for organizing this.

OLD
SCHOOL CAFETERIA PIZZA
This
pizza recipe captures the essence of all that was good in the school cafeterias of our youth. (Cafeteria ladies not included.)
INGREDIENTS:
Pizza Crust
1 packet quick rise yeast
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup instant dry milk
3 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons oil
2 1/4 cups hot water
2 tablespoons corn meal
Cheese Blend
Pizza Topping
1 pound ground beef
1/2 pound mild Italian sausage
1 large onion chopped
2 cloves garlic minced
1 cup water
6-8 ounces tomato paste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
.
4 oz each grated American,
grated medium cheddar, grated mozzarella cheeses
.
DIRECTIONS:
Pizza Crust:
Preheat oven to 475. Line a half-sheet pan with parchment paper.
Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle lightly with cornmeal. Tilt the pan back and forth to distribute corn meal evenly. Combine yeast, flour, dry milk, sugar, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Combine oil and warm water, and then pour into flour mixture and stir thoroughly for about 5 minutes. Mixture will be very sticky. Pour mixture from bowl onto prepared pan and spread evenly using a spatula. Set dough in pan aside to rest for 20-30 minutes. Put the pizza dough pan in the oven and pre-bake until crust is set:
Conventional oven: 475° F for 10 minutes or
Convection oven: 425° F for 7 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside until Pizza Topping has cooled slightly.
Pizza Topping: Prepare the pizza topping while the pizza crust is "resting." In large skillet, combine chopped onion, mild Italian sausage, and ground beef and cooked over medium-high heat until meat is thoroughly browned and onion is soft and translucent. Add tomato paste, water, brown sugar, and dried herbs. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes. The mixture is done when it is no longer runny. Allow topping to cool slightly before spreading it on pizza.
Cheese Blend: Combine three grated cheeses in a medium bowl.
Assembling
Your Pizza: Carefully spread the Pizza Topping over the pre-baked Pizza Crust. Top evenly with Cheese Blend. Return pizza to hot oven and bake until cheese is melted and topping is heated through:
Conventional oven: 475° F for 10-15 minutes
or Convection oven: 425° F for 5 minutes
