DATELINE: JERRY
McCARTY
Gerald
William McCarty, 57, a business executive who was active
in many charitable causes in Santa Clarita and the Los
Angeles area, died on Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, after
battling cancer for more than three years. Gerald, known
as "Jerry" to his family and friends, passed
away at his favorite place amid all his travels: his home
in Valencia, California. His wife, Kathlene, and their two
children, Dana and Evan, were by his side.
Jerry was
born to Robert and Jean McCarty in Detroit in 1961. Jerry,
who spent more than 35 years in sales and finance, began
his career in the Detroit area before moving to California
in 1995. Most recently he was West Coast sales manager for
Murata Machinery, USA. He also served in key positions at
SMTCL, Fadal Engineering, and The Cross Company.
For 18
years, Jerry also was an adjunct professor at Woodbury
University, where he received his MBA. The California
State Legislature and the County of Los Angeles honored
Jerry for his charitable work such as supporting the Los
Angeles Mission and designing a program to train students
to use machine tools. "DJ Jerry" emceed school
and charity events.
Jerry will
be remembered fondly for his humor and generosity. He is
survived by his wife, Kathlene, children Dana and Evan,
mother Jean, brothers Michael (Karen), Dennis, Richard,
Lawrence (Gina), Kelly (Margaret), and Steve (Kristen),
and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his
brother Daniel and father Robert.
A funeral
Mass was held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 2 pm at
St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Parish, 22508 Copper Hill
Drive, Santa Clarita, California. In lieu of flowers,

children with medical expenses and tuition via gofundme.com/family-of-jerry-mccarty
As
you know by now, my
brother and Metro writer
Jerry McCarty passed away
on December 17. A funeral
mass was said in
California in January. We
wanted to give all of
Jerry's Michigan family
and friends a chance to
toast Jerry in a relaxed
atmosphere. With that
said, we have scheduled a
get-together on March 2 in
the upstairs at Danny J's
Brick Tavern at 6pm -
10pm. It will be a cash
bar, but we will have some
light fair to nibble on.
If you can make it to
celebrate Jerry's life and
friendship, please RSVP on
the form below or email me
at mccartymetro@gmail.com
so we can get an
accurate count. A link to

SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK
Thankfully, no loggers took it down, nor forest fires or earthquakes! Just a quiet life in a California forest for all these years .... 3,200!
(see photo to the right)
Not every tree has a nickname, but 'The President' has earned it. This giant sequoia stands at 247 feet tall & is estimated to be over 3,200 years old. Imagine, this tree was already 700 years old during the height of ancient Greece's civilization and 1200 years old when Jesus lived and Rome was well into its rule of most of the western world and points beyond. The trunk of The President measures at 27 feet across, with 2 BILLION needles From base to top.
Because of its unbelievable size, this tree has never been photographed in its entirety, until now. National Geographic photographers have worked along with scientists to try and create the first photo that shows the President in all its glory. They had to Climb the tree with pulleys and levers, and took thousands of photos. Of those, they selected 126 and stitched them together, to get this incredible portrait of the President. And here it is: The man standing near the trunk of the tree is a good indicator of the tree's size. Incredible, isn't it?

Dear Editor: Lately a few of the emails I sent bounced back to me. Does this have something to do with where I stash the computer box (under my desk)? Long ago we got the TV to work better when we strung aluminum foil on the rabbit ears antenna. Will foil work with my desktop computer?
-Low-tech in Hudsonville
ED
NOTE: Actually, it has something to do with the
electrical current in your household. Since you have
the aluminum foil, stick it into the electrical
socket while licking both terminals of a 9-volt
battery. That should help your particular situation
(PLEASE NOTE... Do not try this at home.... The low
tech in Hudsonville is a trained professional)
Dear Editor: I am puzzled. Why did I finish so low in regular season Pigskin Pickem in The Metro? What is the secret in that game? Pick all home teams, maybe? Pick teams to win that are higher in the alphabet?
-Mike M, West Michigan
ED
NOTE: My suggestion for next year is to consult with a
higher authority and have your picks done by someone with
much more knowledge of football and the NFL. Thinking maybe
your granddaughter Natalie or your grandson Henry. Both
should be able to share their wisdom with you.
