If you are at least 40 years old (and I'm not saying that I am), you probably remember something called PENNY CANDY. How absurd by today's standards, but back in my childhood growing up in Detroit in the 1960's, we could do a lot of damage with not much change in our pockets.
.
My brother Jerry and I would receive a generous 16 cent allowance every week from our Dad. We would then take the half mile walk to Happy Jack's Party Store on Joy Road in Detroit. If we were lucky, we would find a guy drinking a beer in the alley behind the party store, and when he was done slugging it, an empty 2 cent returnable beer bottle was ours to boot, and if we were REALLY lucky, we wouldn't run into Rex, the neighbor hoarse barking dog.
.
Oh yeah... as I type this today, I remember my favorite penny candies that I was once so fond of. From root beer barrels, to jawbreakers, to Bazooka Joe bubble gum, Mary Janes and Squirrels, candy cigarettes to wax lips and candy buttons. Everyone had their favorite. These candies would make that 16 cent allowance go a long way to bringing a smile to my face or the face of my brother Jerry, as we made the half mile walk back home to Sussex.

A McCarty Recommendation

A great place to get your childhood feeling back, no matter your age, is to take a trip to Rau's Country Store.  They are located in downtown Frankenmuth, Michigan's "Little Bavaria", Rau's offers the visitor an opportunity to take a step back in time. You're sure to ponder the horse and buggy days as you browse their establishment encompassing three floors and over 20 rooms and areas reminiscent of the kind of merchandise Grandpa found while he was shopping for Grandma. Just 1 1/2 - 2 hours north of Detroit via I-75, take Birch Run exit, turn right off of exit, and follow signs to Frankenmuth. From the north, they are 15 -20 minutes from Saginaw from southbound I-75, take the Bridgeport/Frankenmuth exit, and follow the signs to Frankenmuth.

If you were lucky enough to remember Penny Candy, try your hand at recognizing some of these items from your childhood. If you are stumped... the answers are below.
