Hey!!! Where did the summer go? This summer just flew by for your Metro editor. When I think back, there was a lot that happened, but I wasn't there long enough to enjoy it. I guess that just means I'm getting old. One of the things I remember is the 2007 DMGC. Have you ever seen the movie "Grumpy Old Men"? Well, my playing partner Millard and I were waiting on the elderly starter to get us going, when I replied in a soft voice "C'mon old man, get it going". Well, the starter obliviously heard me, and started giving me some sh## (crap) in a joking way. | | . I was really impressed, and not by the fact that the old man even heard me (probably turned up his hearing aid), but just his good nature, and wealth of knowledge of golf, the world, and life. He also impressed me with his easy going ways. So, my final thought is about the senior citizens I call "old men". They are easy to spot at sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, they hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old men remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam. . |
| If you bump into an old man on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an old man on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old men trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old men hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old men get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth on TV or in movies. Old men have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it's about their grandchildren. | . It's the old men who know our great country is protected, not by politicians or police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs old men with their decent values. When I grow up, I want to be an old man. Thank God for old men! |
