ONCE AGAIN... I GET THE LAST WORD IN

.
Thank you for reading the November issue, and a special thanks to those who have contributed to it this past month, as well as this past year. Hopefully, we are keeping the news fresh, funny, and thought provoking. Just an FYI... The next edition of the McCarty Metro will be a combination December/January issue. HEY LOOK! The made me into a PEZ dispenser.>>>

On October 28th, Margaret and I attended the wedding reception of John and Ann Marie Russo. John asked me to give the blessing which was a proud moment for me. The best part though was just seeing my good friend so happy. My wish for both of you is that the saddest day of your future is no worse than the happiest day of your past. You are both dear friends to Margaret and me.

November 7th is election day. A day that every person in the country has a chance at saying "Good Job" to your incumbent, or "I think you should find a new line of work because politics just ain't your bag!" Hopefully, you have given your choices and your candidates much thought.

November 11th is an important day... Veterans Day. It is very important to recognize our veterans. Why you may ask? Because it's the veteran, not the priest, who has given us freedom of religion. It's the veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It's the veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It's the veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It's the veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It's the veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. And, it is the veteran who still salutes the Flag. To all of our veterans... I SALUTE YOU!

Thanksgiving is also coming up. Since I worked retail for over 20 years in a previous life, Thanksgiving marks beginning that is the blur called "The Christmas Season". I think it has something to do with the L-tryptophan in the turkey, because I go to take a nap after our big feast, and I wake up to find our stockings hung by the chimney with care.

For my final thought this month, I just want to leave you thinking outside the box a little bit. Hopefully from the 3 examples below, you can learn something about yourself. Don't forget to click on the Absolute Final Thought link at the very bottom. It contains a fitting tribute to our Veterans. Have a great November and a peaceful Thanksgiving Day.

#1 - WHO WOULD YOU VOTE FOR?

It is time to elect the next person to lead your country. The commercials have been run, and this is what you took from the ads... Here are the facts about the three leading candidates:

Candidate 1 is a decorated war hero. He’s a vegetarian, doesn’t smoke, drinks on occasional beer and hasn’t had any extramarital affairs.Candidate 2 was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening.Candidate 3 associates with crooked politicians and consults with astrologists. He’s a chain smoker who's had 2 mistresses. He drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

.
Which of these candidates would be your choice? Decide, then click on the candidate below.

#2 - AN ETHICAL DILEMMA

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis; would you recommend that she have an abortion?

#3 - THE PHILOSOPHY OF CHARLES SCHULTZ
You don't have to actually answer the following questions as they are rhetorical. Just read the questions straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do???

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards - - - It is the ones that care.
