DATELINE: METRO COMPOUND
Alexa Lily McCarty made her first Michigan and Indiana appearances. She also brought her parents (Chris and Amanda) to chaperone. The Labor Day weekend whirlwind tour consisted of flying in from Oregon on Thursday night, driving to South Bend to make an appearance at the Notre Dame opener and wrapping it up with a 'Meet The Baby' party back in Michigan before flying out on Tuesday. There was no whining from this 5 month trooper (although her dad could be heard sobbing after the football game). All-in-all, Alexa got to meet many of her parents friends and relatives and had a very enjoyably trip.

Chris and Amanda would like to thank everyone who helped contribute to Alexa's college fund or diaper fund.

EDITORS NOTE: IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY!!!
This month marks my 20th anniversary as editor of the McCarty Metro. As a kid, I had a stint as editor (didn't we all?), but after Dad died in June 1991, and remembering back to my childhood, I restarted up the paper edition of the Metro that all the brothers participated in over the years. From the original carbon paper versions way back in 1965 under the basement steps on Sussex Avenue in Detroit, to the mailed editions by a single writer in the 70's on North York Drive, to the Goldridge Lane video editions of the 80's, I decided to restart the paper version with many features and multiple contributors. I would like to thank my brothers Mike, Dennis, Rick, Dan, Larry, Jerry and Steve, who has not only helped me immensely this past 20 years, but for keeping it going the 26 years before I started it back up. Thanks to Mom and Dad for all the love and instilling in all of us the family pride that has helped maintain our closeness, even through disagreements, over the years. Thank you to all our readers, both family and friends for supporting the paper by your comments and answering our online questions throughout each edition. Finally, a special thanks to the love of my life Margaret. She has helped me physically and emotionally for the past 27 years. She has been there for me through my illness offering all the support and love a man could ask. Also, for being my co-editor, and the person that has to clean up after (edit) Peanut and Jocko. Here's hoping for another 20... Kelly.

MAJIC is a ministry of Bethlehem Church and helps the poor and homeless in the community.

Mike's show in September was combined with a farm market dinner at a house in the Grand Rapids Area. If anybody will be in GR when one of the monthly shows is on, catch it. Check out: http://grmajic.org/

Not in ArtPrize
this year

<<<<<<<

ARTIST’S STATEMENT: This No. 2 pencil on scrap paper work illustrates the pain of an addict’s withdrawal. After going without spinach for several weeks, Popeye is faded and in pain, as if his throbbing head has split into two and nothing seems to align. Mike did not finish his work in time to enter this year’s ArtPrize competition. There’s always next year.

Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts.
Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!
Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.

Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.
The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.
Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the US.
Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers #1.
Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first.
Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.
Black cats were once believed to be witch's familiars who protected their powers.

DATELINE: NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN
Metro reporter Mike McCarty had lunch on September 10 in Northville with Mike Dakesian, Steve Truman, Creighton Ishi, Ken "Cow" Bridges and Bob Schmidt. Bob's brother, Bill, was invited but couldn't make it. Good time! Everybody's looking good. And Creighton remembers being at the 1968 pennant-clinching game with us at Tiger Stadium. He says he googled his name, and a McCarty Metro account of that popped up.

US HIKERS RELEASED FROM IRANI JAIL

Two American men sentenced in Iran last month to eight years in prison on spying charges were freed to return back to the United States, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has told the Mccarty Metro.

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were arrested in July 2009 near Iran's border with Iraq, where they say they were hiking in the mountains. A third American, Sarah Shourd, was freed in September 2010 and returned home.

The McCarty Metro has learned exclusively that the two will celebrate their release by taking a 10 cruise off the coast of Somalia.

Let's see if we have this correct? If you cross the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the North Korean border illegally you get 12 years hard labor. If you cross the Afghan border illegally, you get shot. If you cross the Saudi Arabian border illegally you will be jailed. If you cross the Chinese border illegally you may never be heard from again. If you cross the Venezuelan border illegally you will be branded a spy and your fate will be sealed. If you cross the Cuban border illegally you will be thrown into political prison to rot. If you cross the US border illegally you get a job, a drivers license, Social Security card, welfare, food stamps, credit cards, subsidized rent or a loan to buy a house, free education, free health care, a lobbyist in Washington billions of dollars worth of public documents printed in your language, the right to carry your country's flag while you, protest that you don't get enough respect, and, in many instances, you can vote, and the latest thing: a free cell phone with free minutes! I just wanted to make sure we had a firm grasp on the "situation"!

DATELINE: DETROIT METROPOLITAN AIRPORT
If you can't afford a doctor, just go to the airport. You will get a free x-ray, breast exam, and, if you play your cards right, a free colonoscopy. Here is the 2011, Miss Metro Airport as voted on by the baggage handlers of Southwest Airlines.

THE HUMAN MIND AT WORK!

A practical example of how the human mind works

In the picture to the right, we will analyze what it represents to some groups of people.

For young men, it's a nice butt. Only the most observant will define this as a butt crossing the street. The really observant will see the thong.

For older men, it is a respectable woman with a nice butt crossing the street.

The perverts will imagine her naked.

The wise men will ponder the presence of mind of the photographer in the face of such beauty and gratitude that it was shared with humanity.

For half of the women, this is an ordinary woman who should not have left home dressed that way.

The other half is wondering where she bought that blouse.

The wise women imagine the misery that this will be at 50.

Children, the curious, and monks will probably notice a dog driving the taxi...

Don't be alarmed, I didn't see the dog either.
