LeRoy Murray celebrated his 80th birthday in style. A huge party was held at his daughter and son-in-law's house in Rochester. On hand were 70+ friends and relatives to wish Leroy all the best. Terry Connolly put together a wonderful DVD collage of photos from the birthday boys' life from a baby, to school, pro baseball in Canada, his life in Detroit, his wedding to Joan, his move to Howell, and enjoying watching his kids and his kids kids grow up. Congratulations Uncle LeRoy. By the way... I like the beard.

  • DATELINE: STORY BEHIND THE STORY
As the birthday party got on the way, whispers between the guests could only anticipate what was to come later in the party. Although everyone wanted it to happen, it took one of Susan's children to get the long awaited reunion of Jean and Joan Schmelzer to perform as the duo "Jean & Joan". They started there career out in the 1940's with the help of Mr. DiSilva making song recordings for the boys overseas. Not since Christmas on North York Drive over 30 years ago, has this combination played together for an audience. It was a magical afternoon. Jean got behind the ivories, and Joan strapped on the guitar, and even Brad Savage got in on the act as they played "Your Cheatin' Heart". An encore followed immediately after the first lighter was lit (they didn't want to see Terry and Susan's house go up in flames again)

VODKA
Besides going well with tonic and ice on a quiet evening, we came up with some other uses for our buddy, Vodka

To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The stuff dissolves adhesive.
To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.
Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.
Spray vodka on wine stains, scrub with a brush, and then blot dry.
Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.
Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.
Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle with vodka and spray bees or wasps to kill them.
pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water into a Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshing ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.
Fill a clean, mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, Fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for 3 days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains
To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.
To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.
Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.
Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.
To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

SECURITY ON THE INTERNET

The main difference between http:// and https:// is that it's all about keeping you secure. HTTP stands for HyperText Transport Protocol, which is just a fancy way of saying it's a protocol (a language, in a manner of speaking) for information to be passed back and forth between web servers and clients. The important thing is the letter S which makes the difference between HTTP and HTTPS. The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure".

If you visit a website or webpage, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://. This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular 'unsecure' language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. If you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site. This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code that no one can eavesdrop on. You understand why this is so important, right? If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://. If it doesn't, there's no way you're going to enter sensitive information like a credit card number.

BUY AMERICAN

This may seem funny, but I was so surprised by what I discovered  I had to share it with you. When I think of the job situation in this country, I can't help but think this helps in some small way. I don't know how many households there are in the U.S. but if these were the only things we bought think of the impact....

This past weekend I was at Kroger. I needed 60 W light bulbs and Bounce dryer sheets.  I was in the light bulb aisle and right next to the GE brand I normally buy was an off brand labeled "Everyday Value." I picked up both types of bulbs and compared the stats - they were the same except for the price.  The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - the USA. So throw out the myth that you cannot find products you use every day that are made right here - from a company in Cleveland!
.

So on to another aisle - Bounce Dryer Sheets....yep you guessed it Bounce was more money and made in Canada, the 20 Everyday Value brand was less money and MADE IN THE USA!  I did laundry yesterday and the dryer sheets performed just like the Bounce Free I have been using for years and at almost half the price!

So my challenge to you is to start reading the labels when you shop for everyday things and see what you can find that is made in the USA - the job you save may be your own or your neighbors! If you accept the challenge, pass this site on to others in your address book so we can all start buying American, one light bulb at a time! Besides, you might save a little green in the process.

TIPS FOR HANDLING TELEMARKETERS

Three Little Words That Work !!

The three little words are: 'Hold On, Please...' These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting. Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt. Then when you eventually hear the phone company's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.

Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end? This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a 'real' sales person to call back and get someone at home. What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!

Junk Mail Help: When you get 'ads' enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these 'ads' with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope. Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 41 cents postage 'IF' and when they receive them back. It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas. Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back! If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them. You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 41 cents. The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice! Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again You get the idea! If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.

AND FINALLY... DATELINE: ALASKA

Now that the presidential election is 6 months in the past, it is time to repair friendships with the other party. Alaska governor Sarah Palin is doing her part to do just that. The rest of the world cannot understand how, after bitter election campaigns, American politicians can kiss and make-up. For instance, Gov. Palin has invited, to her great state of Alaska, the men who defeated her, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. She has set up a moose hunting trip for their enjoyment and hired three prominent experts in their field to assist them. Dick Cheney will lead them on the hunt, Ted Kennedy will drive them back to their cabins each evening, and Bill Clinton will entertain their wives while the hunters are afield. What a lady! That Sarah is such a sport and thinks of everything!
