McCARTY NEWS
  • DATELINE: METRO OFFICES
The gears are starting to turn as the possible shift of power may move the Metro from Clinton Township to Grand Rapids. Although Kelly has been happy in his position at the Metro for the past 16 years, Bradric Inhuman Resources, in a cost cutting move, has saw fit to massively cut the current editor's medical benefits, while keeping all the reporter, and Bradric exec benefits intact. "They are going after the wrong people" said Kelly. "The reporters can write all they want, but without the editor, it would never get to the people to read." In the meantime, Mike McCarty is being touted as the next editor-in-chief. As soon as he can clear his commitments, get a HUGE stack of carbon paper, and convince Karen to move back to Sussex, we may be seeing a new version of the Metro sometime this year.

  • DATELINE: COLUMBUS, OHIO
January was a busy month with one confused, well traveled and renamed kitten. Brad McCarty got a new roommate in Columbus. On his visit back to Clinton Township over the holidays, Brad picked up a new kitten and named him Butters (lower left). I guess you could say that they really did not get along together like Brad and Butters (bread & butter). After moving the cat from Michigan to Ohio, a scratched up Brad called up his dad, who went down to Ohio to pick the cat up. On the way home, Brad's dad, Kelly, renamed Butters to Mittens because of its' white paws. Once home in Clinton Township, Kelly's wife Margaret immediately put Mittens on patrol (lower right).

Because of Kelly's allergies, and the fact that Eddy their dog was EXTREMELY frightened of the new addition, Margaret wanted to find Mittens a new home, so she made a flyer with the kittens picture (lower left). After only a couple of days and 2 sleepless nights for the dog, Margaret found a new home for Mittens. A man from the post office wanted a second kitten for his daughter, and it seemed like a perfect fit. After only a few days in his newest home, the kittens' new owner renamed him "What Did You Do Now You Stupid Sh*t" (lower right).

  • DATELINE LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
My mom asked me how I did at the 7th Annual Vegas Baby Vegas reunion in January. I told her that I still owned the shirt on my back. Then I looked down and realized that I was wearing one of my brother Larry's shirts. The trip was attended this year by several Metro subscribers. Steve McCarty, Kelly McCarty, Larry McCarty, Jerry McCarty and Matt Scholl all made the trip. It was a fun time. Thanks to our Vegas contacts... Chip, Jim & Walt. It was great hearing from or seeing you guys.

  • DATELINE: GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN
Mike McCarty has received his exit date from The Grand Rapids Press -- June 1. In preparation for the big move, Mike has been looking for jobs, pickin' the banjo, checking want ads, playing guitar, etc. Mike will miss The Press, but not so much the 3 a.m. starts. If anyone has any ideas what this banjo boy's next job should be, please contact him through The Metro. And, once again, Kelly, Mike is sorry. He feels he is not cut out to fill your editor shoes at The Metro. Besides, subscribers are used to reading The Metro on their computer screens, not carbon paper.

IMPORTANT NEWS FOR DOG OWNERS

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet.  My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday.  He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but. Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give IV fluids at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours. The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal).  Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream.  We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids.  At the point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have continued to increase daily.  He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220 ... He continued to vomit, and the owners elected to euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk. Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic.  Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's.  Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern. Onions, chocolate, cocoa and macadamia nuts can be fatal, too. Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them. Confirmation from Snopes at http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp

WHAT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE?

Have you ever traveled to Mount Rushmore and wondered what was on the other side of the mountain. That has been always been a mystery to me, so we send out reporter Mike McCarty to hike around the mountain. He reports that the back side is just as breathtaking as the front.
