37 Years Of The Metro

.

I was just thinking about how much life has actually changed for the McCarty's
over the past 37 years, and just how much better its' SUPPOSED to be...

In 1965, the US population was about 150 million less than today, yet we knew more people then, and knew them better

The average annual salary was under $3,000, yet our parents could put some of it away for a rainy day and still live a decent life

A loaf of bread cost about 15 cents, and it was safe for one of us kids to skate to the store and get one

We didn't have air-conditioning, so the windows stayed open, so when you fell off your bike, a half a dozen mothers ran outside to make sure you were OK.

Most families needed only one job, meaning Moms were home when school let out and the kids got home

You loved to climb into a fresh bed at night because the sheets were dried on the clothes line and smelled of all outdoors

People generally lived in the same hometown with their relatives, so "child care" meant grandparents or aunts and uncles

TV was black & white, so to experience glorious color, people went outside.

It snowed more in the Winter, and you had fun making Snow Angels and building snow forts and going in your house so Mom could make you hot chocolate when you got cold

Dad knew how to fix everybody's car, and we didn't have cable TV, but Dad knew how to get the Lions game on TV by adjusting the
antenna

You didn't have to wait until a special occasion to enjoy dinner as a total family, you did it every night.

And finally, just when you were about to do something really bad, chances were you'd run into your neighbor, or the nosy old lady from up the street, or your older brothers' friend, or somebody from church... ALL of whom knew your parents' phone number and YOUR first name.
